LG 32GN650-B monitor – Specs, Pros / Cons: How Does It Get So Accurate?

LG has been present in every branch of the tech industry, bringing innovation to pretty much everything they do. LG’s smartphones were among the most innovative, introducing the curved screen, among others. Turns out, the same curved screen technology would get widely adopted in monitors, and while today we’re looking at the LG 32GN650-B, which doesn’t offer a curved screen, it’s a great gaming monitor that’s even better as a Content Creation monitor, thanks to the color coverage and accuracy that it manages to achieve.

Specs-wise, it’s got a lot going for it. For starters, it’s not a small monitor, offering a 31.5-inch panel with a Quad HD resolution, which means a large canvas for whatever work or game you’ve got going on. The LG 32GN650-B has a 165Hz refresh rate and a 5ms Grey to Grey response time, which is pretty decent for gamers. The monitor also has one of the more adjustable stands, offering complete control over positioning and ergonomics.

Drivers and Software

All downloadable drivers and software can be found on the LG’s Support Page. This includes the drivers as well as the On Screen Control software, which replaces (to an extent) the OSD menu.

Design and Connectivity

Dread it, run from it, but you can’t escape it. The Black and Red color scheme makes another appearance, looking as sharp as it did back in the day. We’ve got thin bezels around the VA panel, with only the chin being thicker. However, the thickness serves a purpose, housing the OSD key for tinkering with monitor settings. The stand is robust and provides a cable channel for better management. It offers three-way adjustment, with Tilt, Pivot (only Clockwise), and Height up to 110 mm. This offers enough play to give you pretty good ergonomics, being able to put the monitor at eye level and not allow you to slouch or stay in an uncomfortable position.

The port selection is pretty straightforward, with two HDMI 2.0 ports, a single DisplayPort 1.4, and an audio jack. Keep in mind that the HDMIs peak at 144Hz, so if you want to experience the full 165Hz refresh rate, you’ll have to use the DisplayPort. Still, having the HDMI is great if you want to plug in a console and play some exclusive games on it.

Display quality, Buy our profiles, Verdict

The LG 32GN650-B brings a 31.5-inch Quad HD screen (2560 x 1440p), which calculates to a pixel density of 93.24 PPI, a pitch of 0.2724 x 0.2724 mm, and a Retina distance of 36.87 inches or 93.64 cm. From this distance, the human eye can’t distinguish individual pixels.

The correlated color temperature on a white screen after a Factory Reset in sRGB mode is 6830 K (Luminance 150 cd/m2 at 20% Brightness). The average gamma value is 2.18.

Color coverage

Here’s an illustration (Fig. 1). The whole “sail-shaped” map below consists of all the colors we can see, while the black crooked line shows all the colors from real-world scenes and nature around us.

Then, we’ve drawn some of the most important and interesting color spaces, compared to the colors the panel of LG 32GN650-B can show:

Standard/For Web: sRGB – widely used color space for most consumer devices, ideal for Web design and development
For Print: AdobeRGB – used in professional photo editing, graphic design, and print
For Photographers/Video Editors: DCI-P3 – used in high-end film production, post-production, and digital cinema
Premium HDR: Rec.2020 – the widest consumer ITU color standard, covering a massive 75.8% of the visible spectrum, a benchmark for premium HDR content

LG 32GN650-B: the yellow dashed triangle (– – – – – –) represents the range of colors this monitor can display. In our tests, we calculated the total color coverage of the monitor at 90% of the sRGB color gamut.

(Fig.1) LG 32GN650-B covers 90% of the Web colors (sRGB)

This means that if the LG 32GN650-B tries to show any color outside of its triangle, it will show the closest color to it that’s inside the triangle.

Color accuracy

Now let’s see how big is the difference between the real colors and the one you’ll see on the LG 32GN650-B. We measure that distance in DeltaE – the bigger the number, the more different they look.

For the next illustration, we’ve chosen 24 common colors like dark and light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc.

Values below 2.0 are considered suitable for color-sensitive work. Before our calibration of the LG 32GN650-B, the Average color accuracy was 4.3 dE (Fig. 2), and with our Web Design and Office Work profile, it lowered to 1.2 dE (Fig. 3). This is a MASSIVE 3.5X INCREASE. Also, dE values below 1.0 are indistinguishable by the human eye, so with a 1.2, you’re getting very accurate colors, ready for any type of color-related workload.

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom-tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate (they may seem strange at first but after a few minutes our brain will start recognizing them as accurate ones – that’s how Health-Guard differs from alternatives like f.lux).

Pro Tip: As the Health-Guard profile simulates paper and has as accurate as possible colors, it could be a great tool for prepress designers!

Gaming and Movies

We also have a third Gaming and Movies profile, which regulates the black colors, making dark areas in games and movies appear more visible, thus giving you a better viewing experience. Shooting at your opponent first can be a make-or-break moment, so make sure you’re best prepared with our profile.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

Verdict

The LG 32GN650-B makes us feel warm and fuzzy inside. It’s a great gaming monitor, but after our color tests and Display Profiles, it also becomes a very competent screen for content creators, especially after we consider the higher resolution and the large 31.5-inch diagonal. For gaming, you’ve got plenty of features to make it super-pleasant, like the 165Hz refresh rate, the quick 5ms Grey to Grey response time, and the FreeSync Premium support.

Now, going to the color tests, the monitor offers 90% sRGB coverage. The better news is that these colors get super accurate once we apply our Web Design and Office Work profile, which reduces the dE value from 4.3 down to 1.2. This is a 3.5X increase in accuracy, putting it on the level of dedicated Studio monitors. You’re getting all of that on top of the gaming features, for a pretty decent price.

The rest of our profiles bring different improvements. The Gaming and Movies profile makes entertainment look better and become more visible by stabilizing the black colors and its hues. As for the Health Guard, it reduces Blue Light Emissions and PWM (Flickering) so your eyes don’t get as tired and your sleep doesn’t get negatively affected. You can read more about both in the linked articles.
