LG-UltraGear-27GN60R-B monitor – Specs, Pros / Cons: 4.5X Accuracy Increase. Buy It Right Now

It surely doesn’t get better than the LG-UltraGear-27GN60R-B. It’s a rather affordable monitor, but brings so many great features to the table (or desk in this case), not only for gaming but for content creation too, as you’ll see once we get to the color tests. The UltraGear series offers pretty good monitors, in terms of features and price. Specs-wise, you get a 27-inch Full HD IPS panel with a 144Hz refresh rate, a 1ms response time, as well as NVIDIA G-Sync support, which is pretty good to see on an affordable screen.

And boy oh boy, Creators will be vying for a monitor like this one, as our Display Profiles absolutely transform it from a good gaming monitor to a beast mode Creator monitor, with the color coverage and accuracy to match. You can get multiple of these, thanks to their low price, and have an amazing studio setup for streaming, gaming, and content creation. Also, since the monitors run at an FHD resolution, having two or three of them won’t put a big strain on the GPU, especially if you make the side monitors run at 60Hz.

Drivers and Software

All drivers and software can be found on LG’s Support website. It includes the drivers, as well as the OnScreenControl app, which gives you most OSD options from inside the OS, so you don’t need to use the small joystick and buttons.

Design and Connectivity

For starters, you can choose between a full-Black color scheme or a Black and Red color scheme. Nevertheless, you’re getting a plastic outside shell, thin bezels on the top and sides, and a stand that doesn’t move as much as we’d like. It only offers Tilt adjustment, which can be useful, but we would have appreciated seeing Height adjustment too. If you want more control, there are VESA 100 x 100 mm mounting holes on the back, so you can install a wall mount, which is the pinnacle of adjustment. The ports are flat on the back and include two HDMI 2.0 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4, an audio jack, and a USB service port.

Display quality, Buy our profiles, Verdict

The LG-UltraGear-27GN60R-B brings a 27-inch Full HD screen (1920 x 1080p), which calculates to a pixel density of 81.59 PPI, a pitch of 0.3113 x 0. 3113 mm, and a Retina distance of 42.14 inches or 107 cm. From this distance, the human eye can’t distinguish individual pixels.

The correlated color temperature on a white screen after a Factory Reset in sRGB mode is 7500 K (Luminance 150 cd/m2 at 20% Brightness). The average gamma value is 2.18.

Color coverage

Here’s an illustration (Fig. 1). The whole “sail-shaped” map below consists of all the colors we can see, while the black crooked line shows all the colors from real-world scenes and nature around us.

Then, we’ve drawn some of the most important and interesting color spaces, compared to the colors the panel of LG-UltraGear-27GN60R can show:

Standard/For Web: sRGB – widely used color space for most consumer devices, ideal for Web design and development
For Print: AdobeRGB – used in professional photo editing, graphic design, and print
For Photographers/Video Editors: DCI-P3 – used in high-end film production, post-production, and digital cinema
Premium HDR: Rec.2020 – the widest consumer ITU color standard, covering a massive 75.8% of the visible spectrum, a benchmark for premium HDR content

LG-UltraGear-27GN60R-B: the yellow dashed triangle (– – – – – –) represents the range of colors this monitor can display. In our tests, we calculated the total color coverage of the monitor at 100% of the sRGB color gamut and 91% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

(Fig.1) LG-UltraGear-27GN60R covers 100% of the Web colors (sRGB)

This means that if the LG-UltraGear-27GN60R tries to show any color outside of its triangle, it will show the closest color to it that’s inside the triangle.

Color accuracy

Now let’s see how big is the difference between the real colors and the one you’ll see on the LG-UltraGear-27GN60R. We measure that distance in DeltaE – the bigger the number, the more different they look.

For the next illustration, we’ve chosen 24 common colors like dark and light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc.

Values below 2.0 are considered suitable for color-sensitive work. Before our calibration of the LG-UltraGear-27GN60R, the Average color accuracy was 5.0 dE (Fig. 2), and with our Web Design and Office Work profile, it lowered to 1.1 dE (Fig. 3). This is a SENSATIONAL 450% increase in accuracy, so the monitor is more than ready for Creator work.

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom-tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate (they may seem strange at first but after a few minutes our brain will start recognizing them as accurate ones – that’s how Health-Guard differs from alternatives like f.lux).

Pro Tip: As the Health-Guard profile simulates paper and has as accurate as possible colors, it could be a great tool for prepress designers!

Gaming and Movies

We also have a third Gaming and Movies profile, which regulates the black colors, making dark areas in games and movies appear more visible, thus giving you a better viewing experience. Shooting at your opponent first can be a make-or-break moment, so make sure you’re best prepared with our profile.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

Verdict

What a steal the LG-UltraGear-27GN60R-B turned out to be. It’s an absolute banger of a monitor, thanks to the gaming features like the 144Hz refresh rate, the 1ms response time, and the NVIDIA G-Sync Support, which works at a wide range, covering pretty much the entire spectrum from 30Hz to the max refresh rate of the monitor, which in this case is 144Hz.

You can further spice up your gaming experience with our Gaming and Movies profile, which stabilizes the black colors, giving you a clearer image of what’s going on the screen, especially in dark movie scenes and game environments.

Going to the color coverage and accuracy, the LG-UltraGear-27GN60R-B brings amazing colors, with 100% sRGB and 91% DCI-P3 coverage. Now, the more interesting stuff comes when we whip out our Web Design and Office Work profile, which increases the color accuracy by 450%.

The dE value without it stands at 5.0, going down to 1.1 after we applied it. This is an incredible improvement that needs to be highlighted. It also puts the LG-UltraGear-27GN60R-B among the best affordable monitors, regardless of whether you want to use it for its gaming or design capabilities.

Lastly, the Health-Guard profile does exactly what it says. The profile minimizes Blue Light emissions, which are known to interfere with the circadian rhythm. In simple words, it makes it harder to go to sleep. The profile also reduces PWM (Flickering), which monitors usually use for brightness adjustment. You can learn more about both in the linked articles.
