Detailed NVIDIA comparison: GeForce 920M vs 930M vs 940M vs 950M vs 960M vs 965M vs 970M vs 980M (benchmarks, gaming tests, specs and prices)
NVIDIA has brought us the Maxwell family for quite some time now and we’ve gathered enough information about every GPU that’s part of the new generation. With all the insight we’ve gathered so far, we will try to make an in-depth analysis of each GPU that’s been available to the consumer so far and also suggest some machines that feature the GPUs. Of course, we are going to discuss the specs of each model, but numbers aren’t the only thing to consider. Real-life performance should be the leading factor and that’s why we are here.
Nevertheless, all GPUs that are part of the Maxwell generation share some of the features and specs. For instance, all graphic cards support DirectX 11.2, DirectX 12, OpenCL, OpenGL, CUDA, PhysX etc. Also, all chips are manufactured using the same 28nm technology.

GeForce 920M
This is the entry level GPU that’s mostly integrated inside budget notebooks and aims to be an alternative to the integrated GPU, but retaining the price range. However, some OEMs use this particular model on a CPU-centric machines that require the bare minimum of GPU performance and mostly rely on the processor for CPU-intensive tasks. It’s based on the GK208 GPU core and it should offer relatively better performance than its predecessor and other iGPUs. The GPU comes in two flavors – 1GB or 4GB DDR3 memory. However, each variant can go up to 954MHz with a base clock of 575MHz.
Keep in mind that the GPU is able to run some of the games with the lowest possible settings and it can be mainly used for multimedia purposes, like playing 4K on an external monitor.

GeForce 930M
This is one step higher than the GeForce 920M, but it’s still used mostly in budget and rarely in mid-range notebooks. We’ve got the GM108 core inside that’s has been used in GeForce 840M from the last generation. Other specs include 16 ROPs, 32 TMUs, 384 CUDA cores (shaders), and 2GB DDR3 memory. Interestingly the GPU has really short boost range – from 928 to 941MHz, but it’s rated at 25W TDP and it’s significantly lower compared to the 33W TDP of the 920M.
The GPU can run most of the popular games with settings set to low, but the GPU’s main purpose to be used for multimedia.

All gaming tests were performed with the latest drivers from NVIDIA installed and in this case – 353.30 WHQL and resolution set to 1366 x 768 as this is the maximum that the notebook supports.

GeForce 940MThe 940M means more serious business but still falls into the multimedia graphics card category. Of course, it’s a direct successor to the last year’s 840M and it’s mostly used in mid-range notebooks, but can handle some light gaming. It’s basically the 840M but the GM108 chip runs with slightly higher clocks – 1072 – 1176MHz. The GPU can be found in 2GB or 4GB of DDR3 memory, but either way the graphics card uses 384 shaders (CUDA cores), 24 TMUs and 8 ROPs.Interestingly, this significantly more powerful GPU outperforms the 920M by a lot while it keeps the same TDP of 33W. Yet, the performance of the 940M doesn’t justify the higher TDP and price than the 930M and as we already stated in our article comparing both GPUs, the improvement is by a small margin. The GPU is used inside budget gaming notebooks and offers quite good performance/price value. Compared to the 940M, the GTX 950M will assure significantly higher frame rates and performance for GPU intensive tasks. The base clock of the GM107 core is 941MHz and can go up to 1124MHz, but the TDP is significantly increased up to 50W.However, the GPU can come in two variants with DDR3 and GDDR5 VRAM, but we haven’t had the opportunity to test the latter yet and the variants with DDR3 are more widely spread. Also, CUDA cores are doubled (640) while the texture mapping units and ROPs see smaller, yet effective increase in numbers – 40 and 16 respectively. Moreover, the GPU boasts wider bus width – 128-bit. The GPU is considered to be a high-end model, but it’s mainly used in upper-mid-range gaming notebooks or laptops that are gaming-oriented but keep the slim profile and low weight. It comes in two variants – 2GB and 4GB GDDR5 memory which alone improves the performance a lot compared to the GTX 950M. We are eager to see how that turns out.Anyway, back to the GTX 980M that offers the same GM204 GPU core clocked at 1038MHz – 1127MHz paired with 4GB GDDR5 memory and 256-bit bus width. Other notable specs like 96 TMUs, 1536 CUDA cores, and 64 ROPs make sure that the GPU will perform excellently no matter what you throw at it. The graphics card is perfectly capable of handling the latest games with maximum settings at 1080p resolution, but struggles when it comes to serious 4K gaming. Of course, the 100W TDP and the form factor make the GPU more suitable for 17-inch high-end gaming notebooks. Why does GTA 5 on 920m has more fps on 1080p than 768p?
