[Comparison] Intel Core i9-13900HX vs Apple M2 Pro – The Core i9 is more powerful, but the M2 Pro has some quirks of its own
The M2 Pro is finally here, so the Core i9-13900HX’s wait is over and it can finally go against the new high-powered Apple chip. Looking at the specs of the two CPUs, the M2 Pro has either 10 or 12 CPU cores, and today we’ll be using the 12-core version, in order to see the best possible performance out of the chip. Regardless, the Core i9 still outclasses it, with 24 cores and 32 threads. It also has higher boost clock speeds, however, it would be hard to hit 5.40 GHz on all 8 P-cores, as the cooling would have to work overtime. The Core i9 also has a lead when it comes to wattage, but this also means that the M2 Pro will be more efficient, especially with the good software integration that Apple offers.
The Core i9-13900HX is currently #1 in our Top Laptop CPU Ranking.

CPU benchmarks
The Cinebench R23 benchmark is first, with the Core i9 generating an insurmountable lead of 78%.
Results are from the Cinebench R23 CPU test (the higher the score, the better)
CPU Benchmarks | single/multi Geekbench 5 |
---|---|
Intel Core i9-13900HX | 2016 (+3%) / 20306 (+35%) |
Apple M2 Pro (12C) | 1957 / 15010 |
Next is Geekbench 5, which shows that the core of the M2 Pro by itself is pretty powerful, with the Core i9 being just 3% more powerful. Due to the much higher core count of the Core i9, it outperforms the M2 Pro in the multi-core part of the test, generating a lead of 35%.
Conclusion
The Core i9 is the more powerful CPU, however, laptops with are also incredibly bulky and difficult to carry around, as they need the best possible laptop cooling in order to extract as much performance as possible. The M2 Pro is still very powerful while bringing the benefits of the MacBook, like better portability, a fantastic display, and much better battery life, as the power management is optimized as much as possible.
