Intel Core i5-11300H vs Core i5-8300H – the Tiger Lake H35 CPU is just faster

When we looked at Intel’s Comet Lake-H lineup that was released in 2020 we also can say that these chips we’re a refresh of the Coffee Lake-R 9th Generation CPUs which are a refresh of the 8th Gen Coffee Lake chips. These three generations are based on the 14nm tech process.

The good news is that the Tiger Lake H35 isn’t a refresh (such a relief) while its tech process isn’t refined as the AMD Zen 3 or even the Zen 2 chips. But hey, 10nm is at least something compared to the old 14nm CPUs. If we look at Intel’s CPU refresh cycle, the Comet Lake-H lineup isn’t that different compared to the 8th Gen Coffee Lake CPUs while the Tiger Lake H35 is (almost) sort of a breath of a fresh air

We decided to compare the Intel Core i5-11300H and Core i5-8300H to see the actual gains of the newer architecture. When it comes to specs, both CPUs offer the same amount of cores and threads, the cache size is the same too. The Tiger Lake H35 is taking the lead with its higher clocks (3.10GHz – 4.40GHz vs 2.3GHz – 4.0GHz) and better memory-supported frequencies – DDR4-3200, LPDDR4x-4267 vs DDR4-2666, LPDDR3-2133.

    CPU benchmarks

When it comes to pure CPU power, the Core i5-11300H is just faster (+48%) compared to the Core i5-8300H.

Results are from the Cinebench R23 CPU test (the higher the score, the better)

    GPU benchmarks

The Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 (80EU) is so much faster than the UHD Graphics 630 – the older iGPU shows its age in a negative way.

    Conclusion

Well, that was an expected result. The new Core i5-11300H is way faster compared to the older Core i5-8300H. The Tiger Lake H35 chip is 48% faster in terms of CPU power and its iGPU destroys the Intel UHD Graphics 630. In terms of prices, Intel has listed the Core i5-11300H for $309.00 and the Core i5-8300H for $250.00. The newer CPU is 24% more expensive but it comes with much better performance and improved efficiency which makes it a better buy than the Coffee Lake chip.

Believe it or not, there are still some Core i5-8300H-based devices on the market. You should avoid them or you can get one if the price is hefty reduced.
