Intel Core i7-8565U vs Intel Core i7-8550U – benchmarks and performance comparison

Since they came rather quietly to the market, Whiskey Lake CPUs went through a couple of phases. First, it was the integration phase – why would manufacturers even bother switching the already well-optimized CPUs for something that offers very little improvement, whatsoever. Next, there was the optimization phase, where companies were studying how Whiskey Lake works and how to extract the most of it. And finally, here is the all-in-for-Whiskey-Lake phase. Everyone is going for these CPUs because, despite the lack of major differentiating factors, they seem to work better… or do they?

Specs overview

As we mentioned a couple of times, already, there is little to no difference between these processors. However, let’s start by presenting you the specifications of the older contender – the Core i7-8550U. This device is the top of the line CPU of the Kaby Lake Refresh family of Intel devices. It is built on a 14nm manufacturing process and has a TDP of 15W. Back in the time, when Intel pushed it out on the market, it offered a significant boost in performance with its quad-core/octa-thread configuration – double the number of cores and threads of its predecessor – the Core i7-7500U. Additionally, they work at 1.80 GHz Base Frequency and reach up to 4.00 GHz in Turbo.

At the same time, Intel Core i7-8565U has the same Base frequency, while the maximum one in Turbo mode is significantly higher – 4.60 GHz. Since all of the rest is basically the same, we’re going to focus on the other major difference – the size of the chip. While the older model measures at 42 x 24 mm, the newer one is slightly larger – 46 x 24 mm. This means that the older socket (FC-BGA1356) is not going to work, so there is a new socket as well – FC-BGA1528.

Benchmarks

Frankly, the difference between the two CPUs is not great. Of course, the newer Core i7-8565U excels in the benchmarks, but only just by little. However, recently we tested ASUS ZenBook 15 UX533, which was equipped with the Whiskey Lake flagship. It shattered morale. We got scores, that are more representative for an H-series processor, rather than a 15W ULV CPU. However, the biggest improvement is found in Adobe Photoshop, where we saw better results more constantly.

Conclusion

Indeed, the Core i7-8565U is not nearly as high as an improvement the Core i7-8550U was, compared to its predecessor. However, it is still, despite marginally, better than its opponent at any level. Of course, the results will vary from device to device, given the inconsistency in laptop cooling so in some cases the Core i7-8550U may appear as the better option, but in head to head comparisons with the same cooling and power input, the Whiskey Lake will climb the mountain first.
