ASUS ROG STRIX G17 G712LI vs G712LU vs G712LV vs G712LW – what are the differences?

It seems that ASUS will offer a lot of new gaming notebooks this year. Like the ASUS ROG STRIX G17 (G712) which is something like a stretched version of the smaller G512 variant. The G712 comes with a big 17.3″ screen. There are two panel options – a 120 Hz and a 144 Hz one. A whooping 240 Hz display with 3ms response time could be expected as well. So even the base model isn’t that basic with its 120 Hz refresh rate – neat.

What else – just like the smaller variant, the bigger sibling comes with Intel Comet Lake-H CPUs with up to 8 cores and 16 threads. You can expect 5GHz boost clocks (that is a single-core boost), a big 45W TDP, and up to 12MB of cache size. As for the GPUs, we have a mix of an NVIDIA RTX non-Super and Super video cards. The Super ones are refreshed products with higher shader count which will boost the overall performance compared to the regular RTX GPUs.

You can find more about the ASUS ROG STRIX G15 (G512) Series here: https://laptopmedia.com/series/asus-rog-strix-g17-g712/

There are currently four models among the G17 lineup and every each of them has a different GPU. The models and their video cards are the following:

LI = 1650 Ti
LU = 1660 Ti
LV = RTX 2060
LW = RTX 2070
LWS = RTX 2070 Super

So, the most modest option is the LI variant that comes with the GTX 1650 Ti and the top dog is the LWS model with its RTX 2070 Super.

Interestingly enough, the G17 is slightly thinner than the G512 variant – 22 mm. The weight is 2.85 kg which is fine for a big laptop with a dedicated GPU. The battery is a 66Wh unit. As for the ports, we have 3x USB Type-A 3.0 (Gen 1) and a USB Type-C 3.1 (Gen 2). For faster Internet access there is Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5 is available as well. The keyboard unit has an RGB backlight and a highlighted WASD area. For storage, you can configure your laptop with an NVMe drive and with a standard HDD too.

If you’re on a hunt for a desktop replacement, the G712 is a good option because of its big screen with a high refresh rate and decent hardware under the hood.
