ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16 (GU604, 2023): Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16 (GU604, 2023)

1. Display quality

The 16:10 QHD+ IPS display is simply great for both gaming as well as color-sensitive work. It’s got excellent viewing angles, as well as a peak brightness of 501 nits. There are different modes in the Armory Crate software, which can control the Mini LED backlighting. It covers 99% of the sRGB gamut and 98% of the DCI-P3 gamut. You can also switch between them in the Armory Crate software, depending on if you need a specific gamut for a specific task.

The panel is relatively accurate within the sRGB gamut (left), reaching a dE value of 2.6 without any further calibration on our end. Switching to the DCI-P3 gamut (right) and testing again results in a dE value of 1.0, which is much better, so you’re better off using it.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

2. Input devices

We’re really happy with the keyboard and touchpad of the M16. Despite not having a NumPad, you’re compensated with front-facing speakers, which do fit better with the purpose of the laptop. The keyboard’s got long key travel, while the feedback is a bit tougher than we initially expected. Still, we’d qualify the typing experience as comfortable. The touchpad is a total game changer, as its surface is large and has a glass cover, which means smooth gliding and accurate tracking. The responsiveness from the pad is exceptional as well. Overall, it’s one of the best pads that we’ve seen, rivaling the units on even some fruit-named manufacturers.

3. Upgradeability

The Zephyrus M16 also comes with great upgradeability, with up to 64GB of DDR5 memory, which is accessible through two SODIMM slots. For storage, you have access to two M.2 PCIe Gen 4 SSD slots.

Here is our teardown video, which shows how to access both the RAM and SSD slots.

4. I/O

The port selection of the M16 includes two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) ports, one Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, a Thunderbolt 4 port, an HDMI 2.1 connector, a MicroSD card reader, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

1 reason NOT to buy the ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16 (GU604, 2023)

1. Comfort during full load

Lastly, while the cooling of the laptop does wonders handling the Core i9-13900H and the RTX 4090, it does produce a lot of noise and excess heat, some of which makes its way onto the base, heating it up to 50°C.
