[Specs and Info] Dynabook Tecra A40-K and Tecra A50-K – Unsung heroes

Dynabook is finally going for Alder Lake. The brand is a bit slow when it comes to adopting new hardware, however, it’s better late than never. The Tecra series is one of their most popular, offering good hardware and security, as Dynabook goes one step further and writes a native BIOS, along with implementing many other security features to make them a tempting offer to corporations.

Due to the brand not being as popular as let’s say Lenovo or Dell, large companies might be able to cut deals for better-equipped laptops for their workforce that maintains the same level of quality.

Today we’re giving you a quick overview of the Dynabook Tecra A40-K and the Tecra A50-K.

Design

Both laptops have a very minimal look that fits well in a business setting. Dynabook streamlines the design of their devices, in order to create a uniform and consistent brand image across all lineups, which is a good way to make people familiar with your name. Similar to last year’s A40-J and A50-J, we once again have a plastic chassis with MIL-STD-810H certification for durability, which includes drop and humidity tests, as well as exposure to heat and cold, so you know the device can function regardless of its surroundings. In terms of the dimensions, the Tecra A40-K comes in at 1.45 kg and has an 18.9 mm profile, while the Tecra A50-K  is a bit heavier, at 1.65 kg, and 1mm thicker, at 19.9 mm. The bigger notebook can also fit a NumPad, for those accounting aficionados.

Display

Both laptops have similar display options, with a base configuration that has a 1366 x 768p TN display that we wouldn’t recommend, as the viewing angles are pretty poor. In our opinion, TN panels shouldn’t be offered at all, maybe with an exception for really cheap laptops that need the absolute most corner-cutting. There is an FHD IPS panel as well, which should be your main target.

Specifications and features

Lastly, in terms of specs, the Dynabook offers a total of four Alder Lake P-series CPUs: from the Core i5-1240P all the way to the Core i7-1270P. All of these CPUs have 12 cores and 16 threads but vary in the amount of cache and clock speeds that they deliver. However, they should come with relatively similar performance. For graphics, there’s the Iris Xe Graphics G7, which will do a fine job for most tasks, including some video rendering.

Both laptops come with two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI 2.0 port, an Ethernet port, a MicroSD card reader, and a 3.5 mm audio jack. There is an optional SmartCard reader, which can be used as another layer of security.

The base of the notebook is treated with an antimicrobial material, so it stays hygienic and clean. The keyboard is spill-resistant as well, while the touchpad is covered in a Mylar surface, similar to how Lenovo does it. It has a fingerprint reader in the upper left corner, so overall there are a lot of walls to pass before anyone can get inside the device.
