[Specs and Info] Huawei MateBook 16s – Fantastic looks and a lot of performance

MateBooks are trying their hardest to look like MacBooks, and even if they don’t do a great job, the laptops end up looking stylish. Chinese companies often try to mimic their western competitors, which has worked well for them, especially since there are no copyright and patent laws in the country, so anything’s up for grabs. However, companies like Huawei are now massive and have a large user base, so they can support their own ecosystem and be creative with their designs. The MateBook 16s is Huawei’s latest attempt to make a productivity-oriented notebook that’s great for video editing or graphics design, thanks to its rich colors and powerful hardware.

Today we’re giving you a quick overview of the Huawei MateBook 16s.

Huawei MateBook 16s: Full Specs

Design

The MateBook has a striking appearance, with a metal chassis that has a Space Grey finish and a glossy Huawei wordmark on the lid. The base has a notch in the middle, in order to make it easier to open the lid, while the edges are chamfered, which should make it more comfortable on your wrists and palms when you’re using the device.

On the base, there are front-facing speaker grills, as well as a large touchpad. The keyboard doesn’t have a NumPad, however, it does come with a backlight, so you can use it during the night with no problem. The bezels around the display are very thin but still manage to fit an FHD webcam. In terms of dimensions, the MateBook comes in at 1.99 kg in weight and 17.8 mm, in terms of thickness. The port selection is decent, offering two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, one UBS Type-C port, one Thunderbolt 4 port, an HDMI port, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

Display

The 16.0-inch display has a 3:2 aspect ratio and a 2.5K resolution (2520 x 1680). It uses an IPS panel with 300 nits of peak brightness, a 1500:1 contrast ratio, and 100% sRGB coverage. Huawei states that the panel is calibrated out of the box and should deliver a dE value of < 1. There is an option with a touchscreen.

Specifications and features

The laptop is powered by three Alder Lake H-series processors. The MateBook 16s kicks off with the Core i5-12500H, a 12-core, 16-thread CPU. From there, you can go to the Core i7-12700H and the Core i9-12900H, both with 14 cores and 20 threads. The Core i9 reaches the 5.00 GHz boost clock breakpoint, however, don’t hope of reaching it, since you’d need heavy cooling for that. You get only integrated graphics, which will be fine for casual use and streaming movies and videos, as well as being able to handle video rendering since there is encoding support. The cooling of the MateBook consists of two heat pipes and two fans. Honestly, considering that we’ve only got a CPU to cool down, it will be fine.

The laptop does fit a large 84Wh battery pack, which should be alright, especially since the new hybrid architecture uses only the Efficiency cores when it has to preserve power or when you’re doing menial work like web browsing.
