LG’s laptop division isn’t the largest, but that has worked very well for them. As they focus on fewer devices, you can attribute more time to each of them, in order to build a solid foundation that’s successful. The gram series is their main focus, offering thin & light devices with capable hardware than can perform well when needed. Today we have the 2023 version of the LG gram 17, which is supercharged by Raptor Lake, as well as having a discrete GPU from NVIDIA and a high-res screen, which shapes up the laptop to be a competent video editing rig, while keeping itself agile and light.

Design

LG’s gram devices have always been minimalist and sleek, the gram 17 being no exception. We have a simple design with sharp edges, rounded corners, and a silver gram logo on the back. A 17-inch machine, it comes with a weight of just 1.35 kg for the model with just an iGPU, and 1.45 kg for the model with a discrete GPU. This is very lightweight and perfectly combines with a profile of 17.78 mm, resulting in a featherweight package. Despite that, the laptop should be pretty durable, as LG states that the gram 17 has passed 7 of the MIL-STD-810H durability tests, including vibrations, dust, high and low temperatures, shocks from transportation, as well as high altitude.

The port selection of the gram is pretty good, offering two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI port, a MicroSD card slot, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

Display

The display of choice has a QHD+ resolution, which means a 16:10 aspect ratio, better for productivity, and just in general, having a taller display means more pixels in the same dimensions. The display uses an IPS panel and has up to 400 nits of brightness, as well as a variable refresh rate and 99% DCI-P3 coverage.

Specifications and features

The laptop has only one CPU to offer, the Core i7-1360P, which has 12 cores and 16 threads. It can boost as high as 5.00 GHz, while with a base TDP of 28W, you can squeeze quite a bit of performance. For graphics, you can stick with the Iris Xe Graphics G7 or add the RTX 3050, with 4GB of VRAM that can be of extra help. With it, you can tackle complex Creator work, as well as gaming and streaming. In both cases, you get a large battery. There’s 80Wh for the iGPU config and 90Wh for the dGPU config, but both should last a fair bit, despite the high-res display. You can get the laptop with up to 32GB of LPDDR5 memory, as well as up to 1TB of PCIe Gen 4 storage. We sincerely hope the RAM is upgradeable since there should be enough space on the motherboard for at least one RAM slot.
