Acer Predator Helios Neo 18 (PHN18-71) review – This Beast is Our New Favorite Big-Screen Gaming Laptop

    Verdict

If you need a big-screen laptop but don’t want to spend too much money on it, the Acer Predator Helios Neo 18 (PHN18-71) is one of the few possible solutions on the market. Compared to the Acer Predator Helios 18 (PH18-72), not much has been cut down here in terms of hardware and functions. The cooling is almost the same (the two metal plates are slightly smaller and the CPU fan is plastic), the design is almost identical, the input devices are great, and the chassis rigidity is good. The lower price of the PHN18-71 is achieved thanks to the CPU and GPU options. You can get a device with a 55W 14th Gen Core i5 or Core i7 CPU if you don’t need so much processing power and the top graphics card is the 140W GeForce RTX 4070.

The optional Core i9-14900HX can sustain high clocks no matter the loads and the same can be said for the GeForce RTX 4070 which can maintain ~2610 MHz after half an hour of gaming. The upgradability is good – two SODIMMs and two M.2 slots. You also get a bunch of thermal pads for the RAM stick and the NVMe drives which is what we call attention to detail. The port selection looks up-to-date with the two Thunderbolt 4 connectors, HDMI 2.1, and a MicroSD card reader.

The snappy 1600p 165Hz IPS display (AUO B180QAN01.1 (AUOEB95)) is great for gaming or work. The PWM-free unit boasts 100% sRGB and 99% DCI-P3 coverage alongside great color accuracy thanks to our “Design and Gaming” profile. This transforms the laptop into a universal tool for playing games, color-sensitive work, or content creation.

The full-sized 4-zone RGB keyboard and the huge touchpad are comfortable. The board backlight can be controlled via the PredatorSense app which also provides many goodies such as power presets, different GPU modes, and advanced system monitoring. The battery life isn’t long but that’s something expected considering the big display and the powerful hardware.

The Acer Predator Helios Neo 18 (PHN18-71) isn’t super expensive for an 18-icnher but it offers a good cooling solution, capable hardware, color-accurate 1600p IPS display with fast pixel response times, and a MUX switch.
