ASUS ROG Flow X16 (GV601, 2023) review – the most powerful convertible on the market

    Design and construction

As with most ROG Flow models, the X16 (GV601, 2023)’s body design is full of stripes. This helps you grip the magnesium-aluminum and plastic body. Interestingly, it is pretty stiff and relatively resistant to flex.

Dimension-wise, the laptop is surprisingly portable. It has a profile that stands at 19.4-21.9mm. At the same time, the weight sits at 2.20 kg flat – keep in mind that the hinges on convertibles are more complex and heavy than those on regular models.

Here, the lid can be opened with one hand. Good job from the ASUS engineers. Even the bezels around the screen are super thin. The top one houses a 1080p Web camera with an IR face recognition scanner.

Moving to the base reveals two of the four speaker cutouts. Between them, there is the keyboard, which has a 1-zone RGB backlight. The key travel is decent, while the feedback is pretty clicky. Overall, this is a decent unit for typing. We also like the large spacing between the keys. However, the Arrow buttons are a bit too small.

Above the keyboard, you get three media buttons as well as the Armoury Crate shortcut. Of course, what would a touch-sensitive device be if its touchpad was bad? This one clearly isn’t. It has a large size, accurate tracking, and clicks in almost its entire area.

Now, turn the laptop upside down, to observe the two more speaker cutouts, as well as some ventilation grills. Interestingly, the exhaust vents take up the entire back side of the laptop. In addition, there is one vent on the right.

    Ports

On the left side of the device, there is the power plug, an HDMI 2.1 connector, a Thunderbolt 4 port, as well as the ROG XG Mobile interface to connect an external GPU. Also, there is an Audio jack there. Then, on the right, you will find two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) ports, a MicroSD card slot, and the power button.
