ASUS Vivobook 15 F1504 (X1504) review – Capable Daily Driver with some Trade-Offs

The ASUS Vivobook 15 F1504 (X1504) isn’t a powerhouse but it provides enough power for your daily or office tasks if you pick it with the right hardware for your needs. For starters, avoid the 1080p TN display and get the IPS model unless money isn’t a problem. Some machines come with just 4GB or 8GB of soldered RAM but you can expand the memory via the SODIMM slot.

Depending on the CPU model, you can find a Wi-Fi 5, 6, or 6E card under the bonnet. Speaking of which, this device could be found with a plethora of different 15W processor models including 12th, 13th gen, and Raptor Lake-U Refresh chips. We bought a max-out version with an Intel Core 7 150U, 16GB DDR4 RAM, and an IPS display. Despite the not-so-fast QLC SSD, the overall snappiness is more than enough for normal usage.

Still, keep in mind that the keyboard’s backlight is optional and despite the fact that the port selection offers many connectors, they are a bit dated.

    What’s in the box?

The small box contains some manuals and a compact 45W barrel plug adapter.

    Design and construction

The external look of the Vivobook 15 F1504 (X1504) is typical for an ASUS machine of this caliber – clean, unintrusive, and with rounded edges. The rigidity of the chassis is a mixed bag. The lid feels flexy when it’s opened and we spot a few bends above and below the keyboard. The zone around the Arrows feels kind of spongy during harsh typing. Nothing serious but it’s worth mentioning.

The plastic build has its positive side and that’s the low weight of 1.70 kilos. The 17.9 mm profile thickness is also okay for a 15-incher. You can’t open the lid with one hand which is expected given the category of this device. Despite the bright Cool Silver color of our unit, the smudges on the glossy surface are visible after a few hours of work. Quiet Blue option is also available but we are almost sure that it’ll pick even more fingerprints. The X1504 laptops are also offered with Terra Cotta finish.

The bezels around the display aren’t among the thinnest we’ve seen.

The 720p Web camera on top of the screen has a privacy shutter.

Thanks to the 180-degree hinge, this notebook can lay fully flat on an even surface. Great for content sharing!

This ASUS machine features an Antimicrobial Guard Plus layer that is applied to the frequently touched surfaces on the chassis and it protects you from harmful bacteria.

A look at the base and we can see a nice keyboard with an optional backlight and a NumPad. The half-sized Arrows aren’t comfortable to press but at least these keys are a bit longer than usual which is something. The other dished keycaps provide a good grip, are well-spaced, and offer above-average key travel and clicky feedback. This makes the board comfortable for typing.

The touchpad is a nice surprise. It’s small but the plastic surface is smooth. The accuracy isn’t the best but it’s just fine for work. The optional fingerprint reader is positioned at the top right edge of the pad.

The bottom panel is home to a ventilation grill, speaker cutouts, and four rubber feet. The heat is guided through a vent on the rear. The hinge cover is placed right in front of it and it blocks the hot air from directly reaching the lower side of the screen.

    Ports

On the left, there is just a single USB 2.0 port and some status indicators. Most of the ports are on the right which includes a power plug, an HDMI 1.4, two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and an Audio combo jack.

    Color Coverage

The whole “sail-shaped” map below (Fig. 1) consists of all the colors we can see, while the black crooked line shows all the colors from real-world scenes and nature around us.

Then, we’ve drawn some of the most important and interesting color spaces, compared to the colors the panel of ASUS Vivobook 15 F1504 (X1504) can show:

Standard/For Web: sRGB – widely used color space for most consumer devices, ideal for Web design and development
For Print: AdobeRGB – used in professional photo editing, graphic design, and print
For Photographers/Video Editors: DCI-P3 – used in high-end film production, post-production, and digital cinema
Premium HDR: Rec.2020 – the widest consumer ITU color standard, covering a massive 75.8% of the visible spectrum, a benchmark for premium HDR content

ASUS Vivobook 15 F1504 (X1504): the yellow dashed triangle (– – – – – –) represents the range of colors this monitor can display.

In our tests, we calculated the total color coverage of the monitor at 49% of the sRGB color gamut and 39% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

    (Fig.1) ASUS Vivobook 15 F1504 (X1504) covers 49% of the sRGB gamut

    Brightness and Contrast

The maximum brightness in SDR mode is 279 cd/m² in the center of the screen and 268 cd/m² averaged across the surface with a maximum deviation of 11%.

The Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) on a white screen at maximum brightness is 6780K.

    The contrast ratio is 1190:1.

Uniformity: Luminance, Contrast, and Color Deviation

The figure below shows the results from our uniformity test across different sections of the screen. It’s measured at 180 nits (Windows slider = 64%) — a brightness level we consider typical for standard working conditions.

DeltaE values below 4.0 are acceptable for regular users. For those working with colors, screens with DeltaE values no higher than 2.0 are recommended.

    Color Accuracy

Let’s check the difference between real colors and those you’ll see on the ASUS Vivobook 15 F1504 (X1504). We measure that distance in DeltaE – the higher the number, the more different they look.

Values below 4.0 are acceptable for regular users, while values below 2.0 are suitable for color-sensitive work. A value below 1.0 means the difference is indistinguishable to the naked eye.

For the next graph, we’ve selected 24 common colors, including dark/light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc.

Before our calibration of the ASUS Vivobook 15 F1504 (X1504), the Average color accuracy was 6.6 dE (Fig. 2), and with our Design and Gaming profile, it lowered to 4.2 dE (Fig. 3).

    Visibility in dark scenes

Have you ever watched a movie with dark scenes where you could barely see anything? This often happens because many display panels struggle to differentiate the darkest nuances, making them appear the same.

The next figure illustrates how well the display reproduces these dark nuances. The left side of the image shows the display with stock settings, and the right side shows it with our Design and Gaming profile activated.

On the horizontal axis are the grayscale levels, and on the vertical axis – the corresponding display brightness.

You can also check how your display handles the darkest nuances but keep in mind that this also depends on the settings of your current display and the surrounding light conditions.

    Response time (Gaming capabilities)

We test the reaction time of the pixels with the usual “black-to-white” and “white-to-black” method from 10% to 90% and vice versa.

We recorded Fall Time + Rise Time = 16.2 ms. Short pixel response time is a prerequisite for a smooth picture in dynamic scenes.

After that, we test the reaction time of the pixels with the usual “Gray-to-Gray” method from 50% White to 80% White and vice versa between 10% and 90% of the amplitude.

    Health Impact: PWM (Screen flickering)

Some use PWM to regulate their brightness, which means that instead of reducing the light intensity, they pulse or flicker. Our brain merges the image, so it appears darker, but this strains both it and our vision, especially when the frequency of the pulses is low. You can read more about that in our dedicated article on PWM.

In the graph below, you see the intensity of light at different brightness levels—on the vertical axis is the brightness of the emitted light, and on the horizontal axis—time.

The light from the backlight of the ASUS Vivobook 15 F1504 (X1504) display is not pulse-width modulated, providing visual comfort in the discussed aspect.

    Health Impact: Blue light emissions

Installing our Health-Guard profile not only eliminates harmful PWM when the laptop uses it to control brightness but also reduces harmful Blue Light emissions while keeping the colors of the screen perceptually accurate.

If you’re not familiar with the Blue light, the TL;DR version is – emissions that negatively affect your eyes, skin, and your whole body. You can find more information about that in our dedicated article on Blue Light.

    Health Impact: Screen Reflectance

Glossy-coated displays can cause eye fatigue in high ambient light conditions due to reflections. We measure the level of screen reflection with the display turned off, at a 60° angle.

The reflectance of the ASUS Vivobook 15’s screen is 50.1 GU.

    High Gloss: >70 GU
    Medium Gloss: 30 – 70 GU
    Low Gloss: <30 GU

Our laptop has a 1TB SOLIDIGM P41 Plus (SSDPFKNU010TZ) SSD which has QLC memory chips.

The speeds of this NVMe drive aren’t bad at all and the unit doesn’t get hot during benchmarking.

    Temperatures and comfort, Battery Life

    Max CPU load

In this test we use 100% on the CPU cores, monitoring their frequencies and chip temperature. The first column shows a computer’s reaction to a short load (2-10 seconds), the second column simulates a serious task (between 15 and 30 seconds), and the third column is a good indicator of how good the laptop is for long loads such as video rendering.

The Core 7 150U can sustain an impressively high P and E core clock (for single-fan cooling) of 3.70 GHz / 2.84 GHz in short stress. In the long run, the result is 2.16 GHz / 1.65 GHz which is still decent enough for normal work. Our only complaint is the high chip temperature in medium loads.

    Comfort during full load

In “Performance mode”, the noise is below average which is good news. At the same time, the hotspots on the keyboard and the bottom display bezel reach just 37°C.

The three fan presets can be found in the MyASUS app.

The clock speeds between the “Performance mode” and the “Standard mode” are comparable. In “Whisper mode” the fan is even quieter at the expense of the lower frequencies.

    Battery

Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows’ Power Efficiency setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 180 nits and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with. The 42Wh battery pack lasts for around 8 hours of video playback. Оur test was conducted with the “Battery Saver” preset activated in the Windows “Power & Battery” menu and the “Standard” fan mode turned on in the MyASUS app.

    Disassembly, Upgrade options, and Maintenance

To open this machine, you have to undo 10x Torx-head screws. Insert a thin plastic tool in the top edges to open a gap and then pry the sides. When that is done, pop the front. Use a lever tool to pry the rear.

Here’s how the bottom plate looks on the inside.

This device has a 42Wh battery. To remove it, slide upwards the small metal shroud on top to release the battery connector. Wear gloves to avoid electrical zaps. Gently lift the connector by its sides with a plastic tool.

After that, undo the four Phillips-head screws that keep the battery in place. The capacity is enough for around 8 hours of video playback.

Depending on the processor model, you get 4GB or 8GB of soldered RAM. Still, there is a SODIMM for dual-channel mode that is hidden below a plastic film. ASUS states that the slot fits up to 8GB of DDR4-3200MHz RAM. However, since the CPU can support up to 96GB, this laptop likely wouldn’t have issues running a larger amount of memory than the official manufacturer’s specified limit.

The Wi-Fi 6 card of our laptop is on the left of the fan. For storage, there is just a single M.2 slot compatible with 2280 Gen 4 SSDs. The NVMe is equipped with a heat shield on top.

The single-fan cooling comprises one long heat pipe, a top-mounted heat sink, and a heat spreader.

    Verdict

The ASUS Vivobook 15 F1504 (X1504)  is a capable machine for normal work. The keyboard is comfortable for typing and the touchpad is smooth and accurate enough for the class. Even if the processor is pushed to its limits, the fan doesn’t become loud.

The cooling may not look impressive with its single fan and just one heat pipe, but the Core 7 150U boosts to 3.70 GHz / 2.84 GHz in short stress. This leads to good snappiness for daily tasks. The clocks in long loads are also decent (especially for such a laptop) – 2.16 GHz / 1.65 GHz.

The IPS display (NV156FHM-N4S (BOE09CC)) isn’t meant for content creation and that’s why the color coverage is low. Sadly, this applies to the max brightness as well. On the flip side, the panel is PWM-free and it has wide viewing angles.

The ASUS Vivobook 15 impresses with good input devices, long battery life, and nice comfort during full system loads.
