ASUS Vivobook 15 OLED (X1505) review – when your display is doing the heavy lifting

Verdict

Displays are often overlooked in laptops. People tend to often concentrate on resolution, and settle for TN panels with narrow viewing angles, just because they are Full HD. But in our opinion, the display is just as important as any other factor of the machine.

Sometimes, it is even more crucial – especially when we talk about OLED displays. ASUS Vivobook 15 OLED (X1505)’s OLED panel has a Full HD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and an infinite contrast ratio. This produces true blacks, which are really pleasing to the eye. In addition, the full DCI-P3 color coverage makes the image vibrant.

Moreover, its pixel response time is really fast. Because of that the entire system feels snappier. Unfortunately, the panel uses PWM for low brightness levels, while the pulsations level off with higher brightness.

Thankfully, there is a function in the MyASUS app that tackles this issue by introducing DC dimming. Also, we are pretty happy with the battery life, as we got about 10 hours and 30 minutes of Web browsing, or 7 hours and 30 minutes of video playback on a single charge.

Interestingly, the 15-inch model comes with a larger battery than the 16-inch one – 50Wh vs 42Wh. But still, the port selection lacks an SD card reader and a USB Type-C port that can be used for something more than data transfer.

At least the keyboard and touchpad are pretty comfortable. They can really make you forget about the somewhat flimsy build quality. And guess what – the HD Web camera has a privacy shutter above it.

At the end of the day, we would definitely recommend buying this laptop over a notebook of similar price but with an IPS (or even TN) panel. OLED is so much ahead, that it makes the entire user experience better by just existing.
