Dell G16 7630 review – its CPU boosts up to 200W

    Temperatures and comfort, Battery Life

    Max CPU load

In this test we use 100% on the CPU cores, monitoring their frequencies and chip temperature. The first column shows a computer’s reaction to a short load (2-10 seconds), the second column simulates a serious task (between 15 and 30 seconds), and the third column is a good indicator of how good the laptop is for long loads such as video rendering.

Average P-core frequency; Average E-core frequency; CPU temp.; Package Power

Interestingly, the G16 7630 performs similarly to the two ROG Strix notebooks we’ve tested with this CPU. However, Dell needs 30W more to achieve that. This makes the cooling solution extremely impressive. Especially since the fans don’t turn on until about 5-6 seconds have passed. This happens because apparently, the cooling setup has enough thermal capacity.

    Lenovo Legion Pro 5 (16″, 2023)2625 MHz @ 70°C @ 100W2625 MHz @ 74°C @ 99W

Even though it doesn’t have the highest clock speed we’ve tested, the Dell G16 7630 runs at the highest power target of all laptops here. This, combined with the information from the CPU tests indicates not a lot of effort going in terms of efficiency.

    Gaming comfort

This machine doesn’t really run too hot or loud during gaming. Here, you can see the hotspot on the keyboard. As you can see, the top part of the base is warmer, and we measured a value of nearly 50°C.

    Battery

Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with. This device’s battery life is not great. The 86Wh package lasts for 3 hours and 12 minutes of Web browsing, or 3 hours and 29 minutes of video playback.

In order to simulate real-life conditions, we used our own script for automatic web browsing through over 70 websites.

This difference in the clocks/power ratio between the G16 and other models with the same CPU is related to the variation in chip quality.
This tested G16 i7 apparently did badly in the silicon lottery.

I love my Dell 2023 G16. I have the 13650HX and the 4050 GPU for $1199. I have a 13900k and 4090 for video editing videos on my desktop, but I needed a laptop for editing while on vacation and traveling this summer. I would have bought the 4070 variant, but it wasn’t available for another few weeks and I needed something now. After placing my order through Dell.com, I hopped onto Amazon and ordered a WD Black SN850X 2TB and 64GB of Crucial ram for a total of $300 in upgrades. The G16 isn’t thin or light, but it… Read more »

    Hey Ryan,

Whats your battery life look like if you just find yourself web browsing/ basic tasks?

    Thanks

For what test it’s CPU reach upto 190W? Mine doesn’t reach that wattage.
