Dell Inspiron 16 5630 review – Color-Accurate Display, Long Battery Life, Great for Work

The Dell Inspiron 16 5630 can be described as a typical daily driver or an office machine. It relies on  Intel Raptor Lake-U or Raptor Lake-P series CPUs. So, if you care much about battery life, a 15W chip is definitely a better choice. If your work requires more processing power, a 28W CPU is the way to go. This device is decently compact for a 16-icher and that’s why the memory is soldered. The port selection isn’t something special but at least you get a Thunderbolt 4 port and an SD Card reader.

In terms of displays, you can choose from four panels – three 1200p 60Hz units (one of them supports touch function) and the top dog here is a 1600p 120Hz screen. The rest of the specs look good including Dolby Atmos speakers, a Web camera with a privacy shutter, and a keyboard with an optional backlight. Speaking of which, the fingerprint reader, the IR camera, and the Intel Evo certification aren’t standard features and you have to pay more if you need these extras. Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 aren’t available for all devices either.

What’s in the box?

Inside the package, we found a bit of manuals and the laptop itself. You get a 65W Type-C or barrel plug charger.

Design and construction

The design of the Dell Inspiron 16 5630 is normal for an office machine – clean, with minimal branding on the lid. The latter can be pressed down a bit in the middle but it’s fairly stable when it’s opened. The base is pretty stable except for the upper zone between the hinges which can be flexed if you apply some pressure on purpose. We spot a bit of bend in the central and the right side of the keyboard while typing harshly – nothing serious but the deck could be more stable. The laptop is made of aluminum. The matte surface doesn’t attract a lot of smudges. The dimensions are okay for a 16-inch notebook – 1.82 kg starting weight and 15.42 – 18.20 mm profile.

You can open the lid easily with a single hand.

The bezels around the 16:10 display are thin.

Above the screen is positioned a 1080p or an optional 1080p IR Web camera for Windows Hello. Both models have privacy shutters.

The lid also acts as a lever when the angle of opening is bigger than 90 degrees. The lower part of the unit which has two small rubber feet raises the back of the base which enhances the cooling capabilities of the thermal system.

The keyboard with an optional backlight lacks a NumberPad but it’s surrounded by two front-firing 2.5W Dolby Atmos speakers on the sides. The board is comfortable for typing, the keycaps offer long travel and clicky feedback. The “Up” and “Down” Arrow keys are hard to press. The Power button doubles as an optional fingerprint reader. The touchpad is big (133 – 90 mm), its clicks aren’t very silent and the surface is averagely smooth. Still, the pad is accurate enough for normal work.

The bottom panel houses a big ventilation grill and three rubber feet. The heat is being exhausted via a vent on the back that aims at the lower bezel of the panel. Some amount of hot air reaches the display during full CPU loads.

Ports

On the left side, we can spot a power jack, an HDMI 1.4 for up to 1080p@60Hz external displays, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and a 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 4 port with DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery capabilities. On the left, you get an Audio combo jack, another USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and an SD Card reader.

Display and Sound Quality, Get our Profiles

Dell Inspiron 16 5630 is equipped with a WUXGA (Wide Ultra XGA) panel, model number AUO 51N88-B160UAK (AUOE69B). It comes with a 60Hz refresh rate. Its diagonal is 16.0″ (40.6 cm), and the resolution – 1920 x 1200p. Additionally, the screen ratio is 16:10, the pixel density – 141 ppi, and their pitch – 0.18 x 0.18 mm. The screen can be considered Retina when viewed from at least 61 cm (this is based on the pixel density and the typical viewing distance at which individual pixels cannot be distinguished by the human eye).

Viewing angles are good. We offer images at different angles to evaluate the quality.

Also, a video with locked focus and exposure.

The maximum measured brightness is 337 nits (cd/m2) in the middle of the screen and 337 nits (cd/m2) average across the surface with a maximum deviation of just 2%. The Correlated Color Temperature on a white screen and at maximum brightness is 6420К (the „Color Profiles“ option is turned off in the “MyDell” app).
In the illustration below you can see how the display performs from a uniformity perspective. The illustration below shows how matters are for operational brightness levels (approximately 140 nits) – in this particular case at 43% Brightness (White level = 146 cd/m2, Black level = 0.11 cd/m2).
Values of dE2000 over 4.0 should not occur, and this parameter is one of the first you should check if you intend to use the laptop for color-sensitive work (a maximum tolerance of 2.0). We measured a good contrast ratio – 1340:1.

To make sure we are on the same page, we would like to give you a little introduction to the sRGB color gamut and the Adobe RGB. To start, there’s the CIE 1976 Uniform Chromaticity Diagram that represents the visible specter of colors by the human eye, giving you a better perception of the color gamut coverage and the color accuracy.

Inside the black triangle, you will see the standard color gamut (sRGB) that is being used by millions of people on HDTV and on the web. As for the Adobe RGB, this is used in professional cameras, monitors, etc for printing. Basically, colors inside the black triangle are used by everyone and this is the essential part of the color quality and color accuracy of a mainstream notebook.

Still, we’ve included other color spaces like the famous DCI-P3 standard used by movie studios, as well as the digital UHD Rec.2020 standard. Rec.2020, however, is still a thing of the future and it’s difficult for today’s displays to cover that well. We’ve also included the so-called Michael Pointer gamut, or Pointer’s gamut, which represents the colors that naturally occur around us every day.

The yellow dotted line shows Dell Inspiron 16 5630’s color gamut coverage.

Its display covers 95% of the sRGB/ITU-R BT.709 (web/HDTV standard) in CIE1976, and 81% of DCI-P3.

We tested the accuracy of the display with 24 commonly used colors like light and dark human skin, blue sky, green grass, orange, etc.

Below you can compare the scores of the Dell Inspiron 5630 with the default settings (the „Color Profiles“ option is turned off in the “MyDell” app), and with the “Gaming and Web design” profile (right).

When the „Color Profiles – Movie“ option is turned on in the “MyDell” app, the color mismatch with the Internet standard is increased.

The next figure shows how well the display is able to reproduce really dark parts of an image, which is essential when watching movies or playing games in low ambient light.

The left side of the image represents the display with stock settings, while the right one is with the “Gaming and Web Design” profile activated (the „Color Profiles – Movie“ option is turned on in the “MyDell” app). On the horizontal axis, you will find the grayscale, and on the vertical axis – the luminance of the display. On the two graphs below you can easily check for yourself how your display handles the darkest nuances but keep in mind that this also depends on the settings of your current display, the calibration, the viewing angle, and the surrounding light conditions.

Response time (Gaming capabilities)

We test the reaction time of the pixels with the usual “black-to-white” and “white-to-black” method from 10% to 90% and vice versa.

We recorded Fall Time + Rise Time = 25 ms.

After that, we test the reaction time of the pixels with the usual “Gray-to-Gray” method from 50% White to 80% White and vice versa between 10% and 90% of the amplitude.

Health Impact: PWM (Screen flickering)

Pulse-width modulation (PWM) is an easy way to control monitor brightness. When you lower the brightness, the light intensity of the display is not lowered, but instead turned off and on by the electronics with a frequency indistinguishable to the human eye. In these light impulses, the light/no-light time ratio varies, while brightness remains unchanged, which is harmful to your eyes. You can read more about that in our dedicated article on PWM.

Dell Inspiron 16 5630’s display doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment. This makes the screen pretty comfortable for long periods of use.

Health Impact: Blue light emissions

Installing our Health-Guard profile not only eliminates PWM but also reduces the harmful Blue Light emissions while keeping the colors of the screen perceptually accurate. If you’re not familiar with the Blue light, the TL;DR version is – emissions that negatively affect your eyes, skin, and your whole body. You can find more information about that in our dedicated article on Blue Light.

Health Impact: Gloss-level measurement

Glossy-coated displays are sometimes inconvenient in high ambient light conditions. We show the level of reflection on the screen for the respective laptop when the display is turned off and the measurement angle is 60° (in this case, the result is 70.4 GU).

Sound

Dell Inspiron 16 5630’s speakers produce a sound of very good quality. Its low, mid, and high tones are clear of deviations.

The amplitude-frequency response was taken with the audio profile turned off from the Dell application.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

The optional Core i7-1360P is the most powerful CPU option for this Dell device. In short and medium loads, the processor can maintain decent at best clocks while in longer stress, the clocks reach the official base values.

The GeForce RTX 2050 is mentioned as a 30W chip in the NVIDIA Control Panel and yes, the GPU has no problem maintaining this TGP during gaming.

Comfort during full load

The four power presets and the different charging modes are located in the MyDell app or you can also find these extras in the BIOS. In long CPU loads in “Ultra Performance” mode, the noise that comes from the cooling fan is average. The keyboard doesn’t feel too hot to the touch so you can use the device comfortably for work.

During prolonged periods of 100% CPU stress in “Ultra Performance” the CPU can maintain the official base clock and power limit. In “Optimized”, the clocks are even lower – 1.7 GHz for the P cores and 1.2 GHz for the E cores.

The 30W GPU TGP in “Ultra Performance” mode is decreased to just 20W when applying the “Optimized” preset.

Battery

Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Best Power Efficiency setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 140 nits and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with. The 54Wh battery pack lasts for around 12 hours of video playback. To achieve that, you have to apply the “Best Power Efficiency” preset in the Windows “Power & Battery” menu and select the “Optimized” power plan in the My Dell app.

For every test like this, we use the same video in HD.

Disassembly, Upgrade options, and Maintenance

To open this laptop, you have to undo 9 Phillips-head screws. The ones in the top two corners are captive and they lift up the panel a bit. Raise one of the two zones with a thin plastic tool to create an even bigger gap and pry the sides of the plate. Do the same for the other edge.  Then, fully pry the rear and the front.

Here’s how the bottom plate looks on the inside.

Our device has the base 54Wh battery, you can opt for the optional 64Wh variant. To take it out, detach the connector from the mainboard and undo the 5 Phillips-head screws that keep the unit in place. The base capacity is enough for around 12 hours of video playback. To achieve that, you have to apply the “Best Power Efficiency” preset in the Windows “Power & Battery” menu and select the “Optimized” power plan in the My Dell app.

The memory is soldered. You only get 8GB or 16GB of LPDDR5x-4800MHz RAM that works in dual-channel mode. At least we can have a sneak peek at the memory chips.  For storage, you can rely on a single M.2 slot for 2230 or 2280 Gen 4 SSDs. We found a super-tiny thermal pad below the NVMe. The Wi-Fi card is placed on the right of the storage slot.

The thermal system seems decent for a laptop with an entry-level dGPU. It has a single fan, two long heat pipes, a large top-mounted heatsink, and a heat spreader.

Verdict

If you need a new compact 16-inch laptop that isn’t too heavy, the Dell Inspiron 16 5630 is one of the possible solutions. The aluminum build feels premium to the touch and it’s stable for the most part. It is worth mentioning the small flex on the keyboard during typing. Speaking of which, the board is comfortable for long hours of work because of the long key travel and clicky feedback. Still, the unit lacks a NumPad and the backlight is optional.

Performance-wise, we think the cooling is on the limit with a max-out configuration like ours. Still, the clocks of the optional Core i7-1360P aren’t below the official base values in long loads which is acceptable. Interestingly, the GeForce RTX 2050 is decently snappy for 1080p gaming on lowered details. The GPU achieved 66 FPS in Gears 5 on Medium details which is a good score for such an entry-level chip.

The 1200p 60Hz display (AUO 51N88-B160UAK (AUOE69B)) is good for both office or daily tasks because of the 95% sRGB coverage and the good viewing angles. The panel is also PWM-free so you can use it for long hours of work. When our “Design and Gaming” profile is applied, the color accuracy can reach an average dE score of 1.7 which is a respectable result compared to the 3.5 out-of-the-box score.

The port selection is modest – three USB connectors but at least one of them is Thunderbolt 4. The upgradability is poor – you can just change the SSD or the Wi-Fi card. On the bright side, the battery life is long, even with the base 54Wh capacity – 12 hours of video playback on a single charge sounds good for a laptop with a 28W CPU.

The Dell Inspiron 16 5630 can attract future buyers thanks to its color-accurate display, long battery life, and aluminum build.
