Dell Precision 15 3580 review – a thin and light workstation that could be improved

    Design and construction

Let’s start by analyzing the build materials of this machine. While it is entirely made out of plastic, the build quality is fantastic. There is minimal flex in both the lid and the base.

Moreover, in terms of dimensions, the laptop has a profile of 20.8-22.8mm, while the weight is 1.61 kg. For a workstation. This is characteristic of the Precision 15 35×0 (without 0 at the end, and not a 1).

On the other hand, the lid does not open with one hand. Its bezels are thin, but the top and bottom ones are a bit on the thick side. Thankfully, the former houses a Full HD Web camera, which features a privacy shutter, as well as an optional IR face recognition scanner.

Still, on the note of scanners, there is an optional fingerprint reader. While the unit is not spill-resistant, it has a backlight and is really comfortable for typing. This is because of the decent key travel, and the relatively clicky feedback.

But to be honest, we are more impressed by the smooth surface of the touchpad. This makes it really pleasant to use the unit. Also, you can click the entire surface of the touchpad, and its response time is pretty quick.

The bottom panel houses the ventilation grill, while the hot air escapes from the left side of the chassis. By the way, the speakers are also firing through the bottom.

    Ports

On the left side, you will find a couple of Thunderbolt 4 connectors, as well as a Smart Card reader. Then, on the right, you get a security lock slot, a LAN port, an HDMI 2.0 connector, two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, an audio jack, and a MicroSD card slot. Finally, on the back, you will find a SIM card tray.

Very good, with the better battery and screen option it becomes very attractive, but the CPU tests have exactly the same results as the Yoga 9i with the same 1360P.
I think there is an error there..

Updating: after my message they updated the Cinebench results to exactly the same result obtained by the MSI Summit E14…

Do you actually test the laptops or do you try to approximate the expected results?

Hello! Yes, we do test them. The result is a strange bug, already reported, thank you!

The left side of the laptop also incorporates a battery status light which doesn’t appear to double as a hard disk activity light as on previous Dell laptops. The manual also makes no mention of a pause/break key combination which used to be Fn+B.

BTW Dell dropped the screen size from its model nomenclature a while back guys. This model is simply called the Precision 3580.
