HP EliteBook 840 G10 review – Business Laptop with a Breathtaking Display
Design and construction
The HP EliteBook 840 G10 looks almost identical to its predecessor and to the AMD-based 845 G10 iteration. This is good because the design is up-to-date. This small device is entirely made of metal. It’s also compact. The weight is just 1.36 kilos and the profile thickness is 19.2 mm. The matte surface doesn’t collect many smudges which is great.
Here, the lid can be opened with a single hand which isn’t possible with the EliteBook 845 G10 device. Compared to the latter, the build quality of the laptop in front of us is even better. The lid is more stable and the base bends just slightly in the zone above the touchpad but this can be observed only when you apply pressure on purpose.
The side bezels are thin while the other two are a bit thicker.
The 5MP Web camera with a privacy shutter is orthodoxly placed above the panel. You can also get an optional IR model for Windows Hello.
When you almost reach the max angle of the opening (which is close to the 180-degree mark), the lid will slightly lift the back of the base. Keep in mind that the contact surface of the lid lacks rubber feet so scratches are possible if you prefer to use the device in a fully opened position.
The optional fingerprint reader can be seen on the right palm rest area below the half-sized Arrow keys. The optional backlit spill-resistant keyboard is very comfortable for typing. The keycaps are big, with long travel and clicky feedback. Also, the noise during usage is on the low side.
The touchpad is accurate, its surface is extra smooth, and the clicks are quiet – it’s hard to ask for more. The optional NFC sensor is positioned in the top right corner of the pad.
The bottom plate houses two long rubber feet, two speaker cutouts, and a ventilation grill. The heat has been exhausted via two vents on the rear side of the laptop. When the CPU is stressed at max, some amount of hot air reaches the display.
Ports
On the left, get an HDMI 2.1, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, two Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 40Gbps ports (both support USB Power Delivery and DisplayPort 1.4), and an optional Smartcard Reader. On the right, we can spot an Audio combo jack, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port with charging capabilities, a Nano Security Lock slot, and a SIM Card Slot for optional LTE or 5G connectivity.
