Lenovo IdeaPad 1 (15″, 2023) review – affordable and pretty efficient

Verdict

At the end of the day, the Lenovo IdeaPad 1 (15″, 2023) is one of the better affordable laptops money can buy right now. It has a decent performance, albeit coming from a CPU that is based on old architecture. Playing low-intensity games is possible but at low to medium settings.

We are really happy with the cooling setup, but the main event here is the battery life. We got 9 hours of either Web browsing or video playback, which is a great result. Especially if you compare this device with the ASUS E410.

Lenovo IdeaPad 1 (15″, 2023)’s TN panel has a Full HD resolution, quick pixel response times, and no PWM from the backlight. Unfortunately, it has narrow viewing angles, poor contrast ratio, and only 49% of sRGB color coverage. This combines for an unattractive viewing experience.

To battle this issue, you would want to seek an IPS display option. Indeed this will drive the prices higher, but in our opinion, it will definitely bring your experience to a higher level. Not only that, but it will change the class of the device too.

Especially considering the fact that the laptop has an SD card reader and a pretty fine port selection. On the other hand, the single USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) port only supports data transfer.

Another bummer here is the memory – it is soldered to the motherboard, and there are no SODIMM slots available. This means you won’t be able to upgrade it. Lenovo offers versions with 4, 8, or 16GB of LPDDR5 memory. It would be best to avoid the lowest option. On the bright side, the soldered RAM runs at pretty high clocks – 5500MHz.

Last but not least comes the build quality. As an overall execution, it is good. However, the materials used are not great – soft plastic, which bends a lot when twisted or pressed. Unfortunately, this is an issue with all laptops in this price range. In this case, things are further complicated by the short key travel of the keyboard, which doesn’t combine well with the bendy base.

Overall, the Lenovo IdeaPad 1 (15″, 2023) is for people who need a laptop. If you make sure you get at least 8GB of RAM and an IPS panel you will be pretty happy with your purchase.
