Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 3 review – let’s talk about portable security

Design and construction

Despite its typical boxy design, the ThinkPad T14s Gen 3 is a pretty compact little fella. It is both thinner and lighter than its non-“s” sibling and stops the scales at 1.21 kg. If you opt for the grey model, you will get a slightly heavier notebook – 1.45 kg.

That’s because it is made all out of metal. The black one, on the other hand, comes with a carbon fiber lid, and a metal base and bottom panel. Furthermore, magnesium has found its way into the laptop – we think it is in the form of a Magnesium-aluminum alloy. As you can imagine, the device is pretty sturdy.

Unfortunately, the lid can’t be opened with one hand. However, its hinges can take it to a flat position (180°), while the bezels are pretty thin. Speaking of which, the top one houses a Web cam with a privacy shutter. You can get either a 720p unit or a 1080p one. The latter also has the option for an IR face recognition scanner.

Now, a look at the base reveals the location of the speakers. They are hidden beneath a grill just above the keyboard. On its right, you get the power button, which also acts like a fingerprint reader. The keyboard itself is pretty good – nothing unexpected from a ThinkPad. Its key travel is long, while the feedback is clicky.

This provides you with a pretty comfortable typing experience. Another input device makes a return – the TrackPoint. A trio of buttons, placed above the touchpad, are meant to work with the aforementioned Red knob. On the other hand, the touchpad feels a bit small – 61 by 115 mm. Well, at least the Mylar surface makes its gliding smooth.

Lastly, let’s take a peek at the bottom panel. It has a ventilation grill, and … that’s pretty much it. Hot air, respectively, is being blown out through a vent on the right side of the laptop.

Ports

On the left side, there are two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI 2.0 connector, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and an Audio jack. Then, on the right, there is a Kensington lock slot, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and a Smart Card reader. Finally, the backside offers a SIM card tray, which enables either 4G or 5G connectivity, depending on the WWAN card you have.
