Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 4 (Intel) review – impressively snappy super light business notebook with some shortcomings

    Verdict

The Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 4 (Intel) is a 13-incher that performs like a standard 15″ machine. This makes it a good business device for people who are constantly on the go and need a light and fast device. Speaking of which, the portability is great – the starting weight is just 1.09 kg and we got a profile of 15.95 mm. The build feels premium to the touch with its nice and soft finish but the flexible lid spoils the party. Still, the base is solid and it houses two big speakers that offer clear sound with no deviations.

The comfortable spill-resistant keyboard is squeezed between the cutouts. The only downside here is the backlight that is optional for the machines in a Deep Black color (which is kind of weird). The board is complemented by a smooth touchpad and a Trackpoint.

The cooling isn’t huge but it’s doing a good job in short and medium loads where the CPU maintains high P and E core frequencies. In addition, the processor clock in longer stress is also good for such a compact laptop body. In addition to that, the single fan isn’t noisy and the keyboard will not burn your fingers while benchmarking the device with Cinebench R24.

As always, the low weight comes with some shortcomings. The most noticeable one is the mediocre upgradability. The memory is soldered but you can order the machine with up to 32GB of LPDDR5-4800MHz which is plenty. Sadly, there is just one M.2 slot for Gen 4 SSDs. So, if you need more storage, you have to change the NVMe with a bigger one – this doesn’t sound ideal.

On the bright side, the 1200p IPS panel is perhaps all you need for standard office work (BOE NV133WUM-N67 (LEN41AE)). It’s PWM-free, the viewing angles are wide, the maximum brightness is 446 nits, and it covers the sRGB gamut at 93%. The color accuracy can be additionally improved with our “Design and Gaming profile” from a 2.7 base result to an average dE value of 1.2 which is a noticeable enhancement.

The I/O is up to the standards with its two Thunderbolt 4’s and HDMI 2.1. The default security features are okay – a privacy shutter, a dTPM 2.0 chip, and a Nano Security Slot. However, the list of optional extras is long – 1080p or 5MP IR camera, keyboard backlight, eSIM functionality, Smart card reader, vPro CPU, Human Presence Detection, and Intel Evo certification. The last one can lead to an impressive battery life which in our case is 16 hours and 40 minutes of either Web browsing or video playback on a single charge with the optional 54.7Wh unit.

The Intel version of the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 4 is a fast, compact, and comfortable under load machine that impresses with great input devices and a color-accurate PWM-free IPS panel.
