Display Profiles for Samsung Odyssey G5 27AG550A – The Baby Brother to the G9 Has the Colors and Accuracy to Stand on Its Own

Samsung’s Odyssey G-series of gaming monitors do scale up in features and price, the higher you go up the food chain. So far we’ve had the best (the Odyssey G9) and the worst (Odyssey G3, the G3 isn’t bad at all tho, though it’s actually a very decent entry-level model that gets even better with our profiles). Today we have the middle child, the Odyssey G5 27AG550A, which brings features from the G9, but tones them down a bit in order to match a lower price point.

Currently, the monitor can be found on Samsung’s website for $369 flat. For that price, you get a 27-inch IPS screen, a fast 165Hz refresh rate, and a 1ms response time. The resolution is also higher, at 1440p, so you’ll get more detail and a chance for your PC or laptop to stretch its legs a little and show some real performance. The monitor is also curved, which means a more immersive experience and also looks wickedly cool. The gaming features keep on coming, as the monitor also supports FreeSync Premium, offering tear-free gaming for pretty much any GPU out there.

We’ll also check the color reproduction, and show you just how much our Display profiles can improve the monitor for you, regardless of what it is that you do on it.

Assembly

The monitor is easy to put together, as everything can be done with a simple screwdriver. Due to the curve of the monitor, the movement is restricted slightly, so this isn’t one of the “great” monitor stands we’ve seen on the G4 version, which moves in pretty much all directions.

Drivers and Software

You can find all the downloadable files on Samsung’s Support Page. This includes the drivers for the Odyssey G5 monitor, as well as the Easy Setting Box software, which can make layouts for splitting the screen for multitasking. In this way, you can spread your work as efficiently as possible, improving workflow.

Design and Connectivity

The Odyssey G5 has a black exterior, with plastic used for most of the outside. The 1000R curve looks good, being just enough at this screen size. In terms of stand mobility, the thing offers only a tilt function, as, with the added curve, it doesn’t make much sense for it to include a pivot or swivel mechanism. As for height adjustment, the lack of it is jarring, as it won’t be affected by the curved design. If you want the monitor to be as mobile as possible, you can invest in a VESA stand, which can either be secured to a wall, or to your desk. While the first option is more reliable, the desk mount doesn’t require drilling into your home’s walls so it can be the better option for renters.

Going to the back, there’s all the ports. They consist of an audio jack, an HDMI port, a DisplayPort, a USB service port, and a power plug.

Display quality, Buy our profiles, Verdict

The Odyssey G5 offers a quality VA panel, with a 165Hz refresh rate, a 1ms response time, and FreeSync Premium support. The range of FreeSync starts at 48 FPS to 144 FPS, so regardless of whether you’re playing triple-A games or esports titles, you can have a very smooth and enjoyable experience. Now, let’s check the quality of the panel when it comes to colors.

Color coverage

Here’s an illustration (Fig. 1). The whole “sail-shaped” map below consists of all the colors we can see, while the black crooked line shows all the colors from real-world scenes and nature around us.

Then, we’ve drawn some of the most important and interesting color spaces, compared to the colors the panel of Samsung Odyssey G5 27AG550A can show:

Standard/For Web: sRGB – widely used color space for most consumer devices, ideal for Web design and development
For Print: AdobeRGB – used in professional photo editing, graphic design, and print
For Photographers/Video Editors: DCI-P3 – used in high-end film production, post-production, and digital cinema
Premium HDR: Rec.2020 – the widest consumer ITU color standard, covering a massive 75.8% of the visible spectrum, a benchmark for premium HDR content

Samsung Odyssey G5 27AG550A: the yellow dashed triangle (– – – – – –) represents the range of colors this monitor can display. In our tests, we calculated the total color coverage of the monitor at 97% of the sRGB color gamut and 87% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

(Fig.1)  Samsung Odyssey G5 27AG550A covers 87% of the Web colors (sRGB)

This means that if the Samsung Odyssey G5 27AG550A tries to show any color outside of its triangle, it will show the closest color to it that’s inside the triangle.

Color accuracy

Now let’s see how big is the difference between the real colors and the ones you’ll see on the Lenovo ThinkVision E24-28. We measure that distance in DeltaE – the bigger the number, the more different they look.

For the next illustration, we’ve chosen 24 common colors like dark and light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc.

Values below 2.0 are considered suitable for color-sensitive work. Before our calibration of the Samsung Odyssey G5 27AG550A, the Average color accuracy was 3.9 dE (Fig. 2), and with our Web Design and Office Work profile, it lowered to 1.9 dE (Fig. 3). This is an increase of 2x. Also, with a dE below 2.0, you can handle any type of design or color-grading on the Odyssey G5.

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom-tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate (they may seem strange at first but after a few minutes our brain will start recognizing them as accurate ones – that’s how Health-Guard differs from alternatives like f.lux).

Pro Tip: As the Health-Guard profile simulates paper and has as accurate as possible colors, it could be a great tool for prepress designers!

Gaming and Movies

We also have a third Gaming and Movies profile, which regulates the black colors, making dark areas in games and movies appear more visible, thus giving you a better viewing experience. Shooting at your opponent first can be a make-or-break moment, so make sure you’re best prepared with our profile.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

Verdict

The Samsung Odyssey G5 27AG550A puts gaming and entertainment first, thanks to its fast refresh rate, high resolution, and curve, giving you an immersive experience for both gaming and watching movies and shows. Thanks to the color coverage, which while not ideal at 87% of the sRGB color gamut, you get a colorful and detailed image at Quad HD, which also becomes very accurate using our Display Profiles.

With our “Web Design and Office Work” profile, the Odyssey G5 breaks the 2.0 dE threshold for being used for professional color work, with a dE of 1.9. So not only will your movies look better, but you can moonlight as a designer or a photo and video editor using the same screen that you use for plenty of gaming.

However, specifically for gaming and movies, you’re better off with our creatively named “Gaming and Movies” profile. It regulates the black colors, so shadows and dark scenes are much more visible, even with lower brightness. We’ve all been there, watching “The Batman” and dialing the brightness up to 11 to see what’s going on in the dark, only to be blinded in the next scenes.

As for the “Health Guard”, if your eyes have been getting tired from prolonged exposure to screens, the profile is helpful. First of all, it prevents any PWM that there might be, as well as reducing Blue Light emissions, which have been shown to impact sleep health.
