[In-Depth Comparison] Acer Aspire 3 (A317-54) vs Lenovo IdeaPad 3 (17″, 2022) – Lenovo steals the win unexpectedly

Most of the time, larger 17-inch laptops sacrifice some portability, in order to offer something else. In some cases, manufacturers add better displays, so you can really take advantage of the more space that you’re given. Today we have the Acer Aspire 3 (A317-54) and the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 (17″, 2022), two big boys which sit on the lower end when it comes to price. Both offer decent hardware that can be both powerful and efficient while being light enough to be carried around without much effort.

Today we’re giving you an in-depth comparison between the Acer Aspire 3 (A317-54) and the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 (17″, 2022).

Design and construction

Both machines are made of plastic, which is a no-brainer, considering they are made to be affordable. Purely in terms of the design, we think the Acer takes the cake. It looks just as minimal, with sharp edges and rounded corners, while being a bit more rectangular, rather than round. As for build quality, the Aspire 3 has some faults, as both the lid and base are as bendy as a Limbo professional. The IdeaPad wins out in that regard, as while the lid is flexy, the base still retains some semblance of durability. Lastly, when it comes to portability, the IdeaPad is around 200g lighter, stopping the scale at 2.04 kg. It’s also thinner, with a profile of 19.9 mm, compared to the 20.9 mm of the Aspire 3.

Keyboard and touchpad

On both machines, the lid can’t be opened with one hand. Nevertheless, once opened you’re exposed to the base, which has a lot of space, despite housing full-sized keyboards with a NumPad and touchpads. Both laptops totally miss the point with the boards, providing short key travel and non-uniform feedback, which isn’t the most comfortable for typing. The touchpads aren’t much to talk about either. The unit on the IdeaPad 3 is smooth and precise, however, the size could have been bigger. On the other hand, the Aspire 3 has a bigger pad and a smooth surface, but the tracking is sluggish most of the time.

Ports

The Aspire 3 comes with a pretty outdated port selection, which consists of three USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, a LAN port, an audio jack, and an HDMI port. Yes, you don’t see Type-C anywhere, because there is none.

The IdeaPad 3 has a more balanced I/O, with one USB 2.0 port, one USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, an HDMI 1.4b port, one USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, an audio jack, and an SD card slot.

Spec sheet

Disassembly, Upgrade options

The Aspire 3 makes up for its I/O by offering two SODIMM slots for up to 64GB of DDR4 memory as well as two M.2 slots for Gen 4 SSDs. The IdeaPad isn’t as open to upgrades, having up to 8GB of soldered memory and a SODIMM slot. Its M.2 slot does fit Gen 4 SSDs, but the laptop will run them at Gen 3 speeds. If you order the IdeaPad 3 with the smaller 38Wh battery pack, you will be able to add an additional 2.5-inch SATA SSD.

The IdeaPad 3 comes with decently higher brightness, along with better uniformity, maxing out at 350 nits in the middle of the screen and 344 nits as an average across the entire display area. Compared to the 261 nits in the center of the screen of the Aspire 3 and the 246 nit average, it’s a substantial and noticeable difference. What the Acer laptop has going is the higher contrast ratio, with 1400:1 against 1120:1.

Color coverage

To make sure we are on the same page, we would like to give you a little introduction to the sRGB color gamut and the Adobe RGB. To start, there’s the CIE 1976 Uniform Chromaticity Diagram that represents the visible specter of colors by the human eye, giving you a better perception of the color gamut coverage and the color accuracy.

Inside the black triangle, you will see the standard color gamut (sRGB) that is being used by millions of people on HDTV and on the web. As for the Adobe RGB, this is used in professional cameras, monitors, etc for printing. Basically, colors inside the black triangle are used by everyone and this is the essential part of the color quality and color accuracy of a mainstream notebook.

Still, we’ve included other color spaces like the famous DCI-P3 standard used by movie studios, as well as the digital UHD Rec.2020 standard. Rec.2020, however, is still a thing of the future and it’s difficult for today’s displays to cover that well. We’ve also included the so-called Michael Pointer gamut, or Pointer’s gamut, which represents the colors that naturally occur around us every day.

The yellow dotted line shows the color coverage of both the Aspire 3 (A317-54) and the IdeaPad 3 (17″, 2022). The IdeaPad is the better of the two, showing 96% sRGB coverage, compared to 55% of its competitor.

Health Impact – PWM / Blue light

PWM – Screen flickering

Pulse-width modulation (PWM) is an easy way to control monitor brightness. When you lower the brightness, the light intensity of the backlight is not lowered, but instead turned off and on by the electronics with a frequency indistinguishable to the human eye. In these light impulses, the light/no-light time ratio varies, while brightness remains unchanged, which is harmful to your eyes. You can read more about that in our dedicated article on PWM.

Both laptops show no PWM usage across all brightness levels.

Blue light emissions

Installing our Health-Guard profile not only eliminates PWM but also reduces the harmful Blue Light emissions while keeping the colors of the screen perceptually accurate. If you’re not familiar with the Blue light, the TL;DR version is – emissions that negatively affect your eyes, skin, and your whole body. You can find more information about that in our dedicated article on Blue Light.

Battery life

Both laptops have pretty similar batteries, with 42Wh for the Aspire and 45Wh for the IdeaPad. The IdeaPad comes out ahead in both tests, lasting for 35 minutes more in web browsing and 1 hour and 26 minutes more in video playback. The way we test the laptops is with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with. Under different conditions, you should totally expect different results.

Performance

The Aspire 3 comes with two Alder Lake U-series chips, either the Core i5-1235U or the Core i7-1255U. On the other hand, the IdeaPad relies on both the Alder Lake U-series and the Ryzen 5000U-series. For graphics, you only have what’s integrated into the CPU.

Verdict

Affordable 17-inch laptops certainly have a passionate crowd, as we can understand how having a larger screen can be helpful. Both the Acer Aspire 3 and Lenovo IdeaPad 3 have modern designs and look good, albeit the build quality could have been better. The IdeaPad 3 is a bit better in that regard, having a tougher base, while also being lighter and thinner. However, that doesn’t help with the typing experience at all, as the two machines should totally get new keyboards. The current ones have uneven feedback, while the key travel doesn’t utilize the profile to its fullest. The touchpads have their faults as well, with the Aspire 3’s unit not being as responsive as we’d like, while the Lenovo laptop definitely has the space for a bigger one.

As for ports, the Acer notebook has no Type-C ports, which feels like a crime in 2023. On the other hand, the IdeaPad has one, while also giving you an SD card reader. The Aspire 3 compensates by having better upgradeability, with a second RAM slot and no soldered memory. The IdeaPad is a clear winner when it comes to the display, having a great unit with good brightness and nearly full sRGB coverage. It also gets accurate, so you can definitely use it for color-grading videos and images. The Lenovo device continues scoring points when it comes to its speakers as well as battery life.

When it comes to performance, the Lenovo notebook and its Ryzen 7 chip are faster in 3D Rendering, however, the Aspire 3 answers quickly with the Core i7 in Photoshop. Its iGPU is also performing way better in benchmarks, while AMD still takes some Ws in the gaming tests. Lastly, while we can’t exactly compare the cooling setups, since they cool down different hardware, both laptops are at the top of their fields and manage to take good care of their components. For comfort, the Aspire 3 runs cooler on the outside, with a significant difference of around 5°C. For us, the IdeaPad 3 is ahead in certain fields, like the display and port selection, while the performance is still on par, if not better in some regards, which at least for us is very important.

Why choose the Acer Aspire 3 (A317-54)?

  • Runs cooler
  • Better upgradeability

Why choose the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 (17″, 2022)?

  • Better display
  • More balanced I/O
