Inside Dell G7 17 7790 – disassembly and upgrade options

Dell G7 is one of these devices that definitely feel bulkier than they are. You know what we mean – when you have the laptop in your hands and it is heavy and everything else, but when you see the stats or put it on a scale it is far slimmer than something like the Helios 500 for example. However, let’s see if it is nearly as beautiful on the inside as its smaller cousin – the G5 15 5590.

1. Remove the bottom plate

In order to remove it, you’ll need to unscrew 10 Phillips-head screws from their mounts. Two of them (the back middle ones), however, will stay attached to the bottom panel, as they have special brackets. This makes it very easy to remove the bottom plate, without the help of any pry tools, as the panel lifts itself enough, for a finger to get inside (the laptop, you pervert!).

2. Battery

This laptop’s battery has an Alienware branding and is essentially the same as the one on the G5 15 5590. It has a 60Wh capacity and very good longevity for a gaming device, reaching almost 8 hours of web browsing and more than 6 hours of video playback.

3. Memory and storage

Here you’ll see two RAM DIMMs, supporting up to 32GB of DDR4 memory with speeds up to 2667 MHz. Additionally, there is a plastic chassis enforcement bracket sitting on top of them to help with the rigidity of the device. Storage-wise there are two options – the SATA connector and an M.2 PCIe x4 slot which has a cooling metal sheet on top of the drive.

4. Cooling system

Dell G7 17 7790, uses extremely long heat pipes to cool down its CPU and GPU. Two of them (a thinner and a thicker one) share the burden of cooling both of the chips, while there is one more each taking the long route beneath the fans and to the sides, where they are met by two rather small heatsinks. Additionally, you can see two metal plates helping with the VRAM and VRM thermals. Last but not least, however, is the color… there should be more blue heatsinks.

I am wondering which M2 – 2280 SSD’s are supported. Cant seem to find a list. I am soon buying this laptop and want to upgrade the default 256GB SSD with a WD BLUE 1TB SS. Just wondering if this will be supported or not. Any suggestions ?

I did, I put an Intel/OKN WiFi 6 AX200 802.11ax in my G7-7790. I see 230-250 Mbps download on my Wifi Nighthawk MS60. Same as wired now. Very happy with it. Put one in my Dell 7540 work laptop too. Solved my problematic Qualcomm bluetooth issues too.
