The Intel Core i9-8950HK reaches 2nd place in our Top Laptop CPU ranking

The 8th gen Intel Core i9 mobile processor suitable for high-end gaming laptops and working stations was recently announced and has already managed to hit the second place in our Top Laptop CPU ranking.

Let’s cover the specs sheet briefly. For starters, as the first Core i9 member of mobile Intel CPUs, Core i9-8950HK is based on the Coffee Lake architecture. The 14nm chip features 6 cores, while still supporting the HyperThreading technology which enables the processor to execute 12 sets of instructions at the same time. What’s more, Intel Core i9-8950HK is unlocked for overclocking and runs at a base frequency of 2.90 GHz and reaches up to 4.80 GHz in Turbo mode on one of the cores.

Furthermore, the new Coffee Lake CPUs are more power efficient featuring the same 45W TDP as Kaby Lake CPUs, while also having 50% more cores and twice the cache – 12 MB L3. The processor is also paired with the integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 graphics card which stands out with a bit higher clock speeds (350 – 1200 MHz vs 350 – 1100 MHz) as opposed to the Kaby Lake chips and support for H265/HEVC Main10, the VP9 codec, as well as the HDCP 2.2.
