HP Omen 17 (2023, 17-ck2000) review – it is pretty good but can’t match its direct competitors

    Design and construction

As we said, HP didn’t really change the design of the Omen series. It has a boxy structure with sharp corners. Its lid is made out of plastic, while the base is aluminum.

In terms of dimensions, it stops the scales at 2.79 kg, while the thickness is 27mm. Interestingly, both the lid and the base are pretty resistant to flex. Now, the click pad activates when you twist the base, but the actual flex is very little.

Thankfully, the lid opens with one hand. However, the hinges are not very stable. We noticed a lot of bounce, which is not only annoying but also not very confidence-inspiring. By the way, there is an HD Web camera above the matte display, while the bottom bezel is a bit too thick.

Moving to the base, we see an RGB-backlit keyboard. There is an optional Per-Key unit, while the basic option is a 4-zone unit. It has long key travel, clicky feedback, and huge Arrow keys. In addition, you get an HP Omen Gaming Hub shortcut, paired with a couple of programmable buttons.

Below it, there is the touchpad. It has a pretty big size and smooth texture. Its best feature is the fact that it comes with blazingly quick response times, especially when paired with the 240Hz display.

Turn the laptop upside down, and you’ll see the two speaker cutouts. You may have mistaken the vent above the keyboard for a speaker grill, but it is only meant for ventilation. This is the purpose of the large cutout on the bottom panel too. On the other hand, the hot air escapes through two vents on the back, and on on the right side of the machine.

    Ports

On the left side, there is the power plug, a LAN port, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, a Mini DisplayPort, an HDMI 2.1 connector, a Thunderbolt 4 port, an Audio jack, and an SD card slot. Then, on the right, you get two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports.

I bought this laptop and I’m disappointed for the price I paid. I instantly upgraded the ram, but my research said gen 13 i7 only supports up to 4800 ram. I9 will do 5200 and maybe higher. But what I’m most disappointed at is the bios has almost no features. I’m not talking about overclocking. At boot, if you hit ESC and wait for the bios text, then his win+A, you can get into advanced bios, which is just the ability to view ram timing. You can under clock the ram. That’s their idea of boosting performance. All I want… Read more »

But how was the general performance itself? The frames, etc. And the heating too, how are thermals

Yeah, the BIOS on most laptops are a joke, but this one takes it to a whole new level. The most barebones I have ever seen. They have this laptop locked down hard.

It has TWO BIOS screens, the very basic testing one & the advanced one, two totally different ways to get into them. The OMEN software is needed to tweek setting for power saving & performance, however, HP Omen softwar is SPYWARE & illegally ‘phones home’ all your private & gaming data, scans your games and the tries to shep their game sales on you. You can block OMEN spying to HP by altering the HOSTS File & blocking HP from your LANs at the router firewall level. OMEN software is the obscene case of digital tresspassing I’ve seen since Windows… Read more »
