HP Omen 17 (2023, 17-ck2000) review – it is pretty good but can’t match its direct competitors
Verdict
HP has once again created a laptop that is absolutely packed with features. Audio is created by Bang & Olufsen, the sound card supports DTS:X Ultra, while there is a present 3.5mm jack.
Not to mention the port selection, which not only features a Thunderbolt 4 connector, SD card reader, and a real HDMI 2.1, but also a Mini DisplayPort, three USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, and a LAN port. This is pretty much every port you’ll ever need in a laptop.
Of course, the hardware is a big part of this setup. Its 55W 13th Gen Intel CPU is insanely powerful, while the RTX 4080 is capable of using its full 175W TGP budget. However, there are a couple of things regarding the cooling. For starters, it only uses three heat pipes, which sounds like madness in 2023. And while it can sustain the aforementioned RTX 4080, it doesn’t come without disadvantages.
One price to pay is the high internal temperature. Another is the high noise. Last, but not least – it doesn’t quite get to the clocks reached by the Lenovo Legion 7 (16″, 2023).
On the bright side, the device comes with a fantastic display. HP Omen 17 (2023, 17-ck2000)’s IPS panel has a WQHD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. It doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment, which means that you can play games for long periods of time, with the display remaining relatively comfortable to look at.
In addition, it covers 91% of the sRGB color gamut, while our Gaming and Web design profile really improves the color accuracy. Furthermore, its quick pixel response times and 240Hz refresh rate makes the overall experience really smooth.
In terms of other usability like the keyboard and touchpad, we are happy to inform you that you will be glad to play games on this setup. Of course, the touchpad is not made for gaming, but it is a fantastic daily driver.
One thing we didn’t particularly like about this machine is its hinges’ build quality. They are really flimsy and don’t inspire confidence at any point.
Other than that, the laptop is built pretty well – aluminum for the base, and plastic for the lid. Overall, the product is not bad. We can forgive the design features of 2020, but it just lacks the edge compared to the Lenovo Legion Pro 7 (16″, 2023).

I bought this laptop and I’m disappointed for the price I paid. I instantly upgraded the ram, but my research said gen 13 i7 only supports up to 4800 ram. I9 will do 5200 and maybe higher. But what I’m most disappointed at is the bios has almost no features. I’m not talking about overclocking. At boot, if you hit ESC and wait for the bios text, then his win+A, you can get into advanced bios, which is just the ability to view ram timing. You can under clock the ram. That’s their idea of boosting performance. All I want… Read more »
But how was the general performance itself? The frames, etc. And the heating too, how are thermals
Cant get into advanced bios, any suggestion?
Yeah, the BIOS on most laptops are a joke, but this one takes it to a whole new level. The most barebones I have ever seen. They have this laptop locked down hard.
It has TWO BIOS screens, the very basic testing one & the advanced one, two totally different ways to get into them. The OMEN software is needed to tweek setting for power saving & performance, however, HP Omen softwar is SPYWARE & illegally ‘phones home’ all your private & gaming data, scans your games and the tries to shep their game sales on you. You can block OMEN spying to HP by altering the HOSTS File & blocking HP from your LANs at the router firewall level. OMEN software is the obscene case of digital tresspassing I’ve seen since Windows… Read more »
