Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 (15, Gen 8) review – decent unpretentious budget daily driver
Design and construction
The design is typical for Lenovo, with rounded corners, minimal branding, and a protrusion on the lid that will ease the opening process. The all-plastic build isn’t solid, we saw a lot of bends and flexes on both the base and lid.
The latter can’t be opened with a single hand and it wiggles during angle changing. The laptop shines bright when it comes to dimensions. The machine weighs 1.62 kg and has a profile thickness of 17.9 mm. Not bad for a 15.6-inch form factor.
The bezels around the display aren’t the thinnest that we’ve seen but they aren’t too thick either.
The “hump” on the top houses a 720p or an optional 1080p Web camera (both have a privacy shutter).
The max angle of opening is pleasantly wide but it can’t reach the 180-degree mark. The Power button that doubles as an optional fingerprint reader is separated from the keyboard. The two 1.5W Dolby Audio speakers are hidden below the long grill beneath the hinge mechanism. The board has a NumPad but the backlight is an option. The key travel and the feedback are fine for normal usage but the whole keyboard deck bends noticeably during typing.
The touchpad is small (69 x 104 mm) but it’s unusually smooth and accurate for its class.
You can see three rubber feet and a ventilation grill on the bottom side of the laptop. The heat is pushed through a vent on the back of the device. This additionally heats the display when the CPU is under max load.
Ports
On the left, we can spot the power plug, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, an HDMI 1.4 connector (for up to 4K 30Hz external displays), a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) port with Power Delivery and DisplayPort 1.2 capabilities (for 4K 60Hz external screens), and an Audio combo jack. On the right, you get a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and an SD card reader.
