Lenovo LOQ (16″ Intel, 2023) review – literally an IdeaPad Gaming copy

    Verdict

In general, the LOQ (16″ Intel, 2023) is a pretty good gaming device. Its GPU overclock function really matters when you need it. Well, you won’t change your laptop into a desktop machine, and you definitely won’t transform its graphics card into a higher-tier one.

What you will do, however, is edge your opponents by a couple of fps here and there, at the expense of high internal and external temperatures. This leaves us with a sour taste and honestly – not wanting to use the function at all.

Also not spectacular is the battery life. We got no more than 6 hours of Web browsing, or 6 hours and 30 minutes of video playback on a single charge from the larger 80Wh package. In our view, the culprit of this rather short battery life is the lack of advanced refresh rate control on the display.

Lenovo LOQ (16″ Intel, 2023)’s IPS panel has a WUXGA resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a very good contrast ratio. It covers 53% of the sRGB color gamut, which makes the image appear a bit dull. However, the backlight doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment, and it comes with a pretty fast 144Hz refresh rate.

By the way, if you get the laptop with the RTX 4060, it will be a good idea to check out the 1600p 165Hz display option, which should offer G-Sync and full sRGB color coverage.

On the other hand, this is an easy way to spike up the price of this otherwise “affordable” product. Unfortunately, it lacks an SD card reader and a Thunderbolt 4 connector, but on the bright side, it has a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, which can provide pretty much the same functionality.

So, did Lenovo do the right thing to introduce the LOQ brand to the market? The answer to this question lies in another one – is the LOQ much different than the IdeaPad Gaming? In our view – no. It seems like the situations in which the manufacturer is selling the same notebook with a different name, depending on the region. But they are not competing in the same region.

Unless Lenovo changes its plans for the IdeaPad Gaming series as a whole, we see no point in selling both products on one market. Regardless of how good they are.

Salut!
