Lenovo ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 review – serious business device with gaming capabilities and long battery life
Verdict
There is no doubt that the Lenovo ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 is an excellent business device. It has a metal build that feels premium. Well, the lid is a bit flexible but the base is rigid. We have nothing to moan about the input devices. The spill-resistant keyboard has a backlight and a NumPad. The board is comfortable for usage thanks to the long key travel and the clicky feedback. The wide touchpad is smooth and accurate.
Our laptop is configured with the default 60Hz 1600p IPS display option LEN160WQ (LEN8A9D) which seems like a good choice for office needs. It has a 16:10 aspect ratio and 88% sRGB coverage. This display is PWM-free and that is important especially if you plan to use the laptop for long hours of work.
Our “Design and Gaming” profile is improving the color accuracy from 2.9 to an average dE value of 1.6 which is a nice “upgrade”. If you want to play games after work and money isn’t a problem, the optional 2000p 165Hz display is perhaps a better choice for this scenario.
The laptop relies on powerful hardware – Intel Raptor Lake-H CPUs and NVIDIA RTX 4000 graphics cards. In our case, the Core i7-13700H can maintain high CPU clocks and power limits no matter the load. The same goes for the GeForce RTX 4060 (Laptop) that can sustain a 108W TGP after half an hour of gaming. This is possible because of the good cooling. Its two fans are noisy in “Extreme Performance” mode if the CPU is heavily stressed while in gaming the noise levels are lower.
If you want to utilize the full power of this machine while the AC adapter is plugged in, there are two curious options in the BIOS – the “Discrete Graphics” (dGPU-only) mode and the “Super Boost” function that allows higher temperatures and fan noise but it improves the overall snappiness of the laptop. There is also a “GPU overclock” function in the Lenovo Vantage software. This reminds us that this device is a true gaming beast and it handles most games on Ultra details with high FPS.
We were amazed by the battery life since this notebook has a 2.5K display and thirsty hardware under the bonnet. The 80Wh capacity is enough for 12 hours and 30 minutes of Web browsing or 10 hours of video playback. Maybe this should be a deal breaker for some business users who are looking for a powerful laptop with a long battery life (and that’s a rare find). The upgradability is on point – two SODIMMs for up to 32GB DDR5-5200MHz RAM and two M.2 slots compatible with Gen 4 SSDs. No complaints here.
The Web camera comes with a privacy shutter and the I/O has a good amount of ports including a Thunderbolt 4 connector and an SD card reader. The two Harman Kardon speakers produce a quality sound clear of deviations. Still, the main con of this notebook is the high price. On the other hand, the Lenovo ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 is a powerful business device with a metal build, potent hardware, a PWM-free display, and a long battery life.
