Lenovo Yoga Slim 6i (14, Gen 8, 14IAP8) review – thin and light machine with Alder Lake P-series CPU options

    Verdict

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 6i (14, Gen 8, 14IAP8) is a good compact device that will not stretch your wallet too much. The build quality impresses us – the laptop is made of aluminum and that’s why the device feels sturdy. We observe a small amount of flex in some areas on the lid and on the base but nothing serious. The design is modern, and the notebook is a good choice for people who are always on the go because of the low weight of the machine (1.31 kg or 1.35 kg depending on the battery model) and its thin profile – 14.9 mm.

The bezels around the display are narrow and the upper one is rich in extras. There, you can find a 1080p Web camera with a privacy shutter, as well as IR and ToF sensors. The keyboard has a backlight and it’s comfortable for typing because of the decent key travel and the clicky feedback. The touchpad has a big glass surface and that’s why it’s accurate.

The 1400p display (LEN040WU+) offers comfortable viewing angles, a 1410:1 contact ratio, 93% sRGB color coverage, and it’s PWM-free as well. Yep, no complaints here. Oh, yes, and thanks to our “Design and Gaming” profile, the color accuracy reaches an average dE value of 1.5 which is way better compared to the default result – 4.6.

Luckily, the performance is always there when you need it. The laptop feels always snappy no matter the task. On the other hand, the cooling solution (which comprises two fans and two heat pipes) can handle the Alder Lake P processor, but Lenovo has chosen a bit unorthodox method in order to deal with the thirsty CPU. In short, the P cores clock is rather low, especially during longer loads, while the E cores clock is impressibly high. Aside from that, the result is good, the laptop feels fast for daily tasks and you can use it even for 3D and 2D rendering because the thermals during prolonged periods of stress are in check.
Popular games like CS:GO and Dota 2 aren’t a problem for the iGPU, so yes, light gaming is mission possible here.

The device isn’t too loud when the CPU is heavily stressed and in this scenario, the base isn’t scorching hot. So you can use the notebook for Web browsing and video rendering at the same time (it’s just an example). The battery life is good – 9 hours and 5 minutes of Web browsing or 7 hours and 42 minutes of video playback is a good result for a laptop with a thirsty CPU and 1400p panel. The I/O isn’t crowded with ports but the selection is modern – an HDMI 2.1, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an Audio jack, and a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port. That’s just fine for a thin 14-inch machine that isn’t pricey.

Expectedly, the upgrade options are probably the only downside here. The memory is soldered to the motherboard, but it works in a dual-channel mode. The maximum amount is 16GB of LPDDR5-4800MHz memory so pick your configuration carefully. For storage, there is just one M.2 slot compatible with Gen. 4 SSDs.

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 6i (14, Gen 8, 14IAP8) is a snappy little gadget that offers plenty of performance for its size. The good build quality, the PWM-free IPS display, and the snappy performance can attract many future buyers, especially when you add a pleasant price tag to the mix.
