Acer Aspire 5 (A515-58M) review – snappy device with very good display and low price

    Verdict

If you need a capable and affordable device, the Acer Aspire 5 (A515-58M) can offer a great bang for the buck. The optional 1440p panel (BOE NE156QHM-N61 (BOE0AFE)) is a nice surprise in the budget category. It has a 90% sRGB color coverage and comfortable viewing angles. The display is PWM-free and thanks to our “Design and Gaming” profile it’s color accuracy is seriously boosted from 6.8 to an average dE value of 1.3 which is a great achievement. The snappy pixel response time of just 10 ms is fast and since the iGPU can handle light games on Low and Medium details you can use this laptop for unpretentious gaming.

The cooing looks modest but it’s doing a good job in any kind of load. The CPU can maintain good frequencies, low temperatures, and high power limits even in long periods of heavy stress. This is one of the main pros of the notebook. The other one is the long battery life. The capacity is just 53Wh but it’s enough for 12 hours and 30 minutes of Web browsing, or 8 hours and 20 minutes of video playback. This speaks of good optimization.

The comfort during 100% CPU load is good – the single fan isn’t noisy and the air-inlet keyboard isn’t hot to the touch. The board has average key travel and feedback but that’s okay for an inexpensive laptop. The touchpad gets the job done – it’s not the best one but it’s smooth enough for daily and office tasks. The notebook doesn’t have a lot of ports but the I/O looks modern enough with its Thunderbolt 4 port and HDMI 2.1. The machine is portable – it weighs under 1.80 kilos and has a profile of 17.9 mm.

This machine isn’t perfect, the base is stable for the most part while the lid is kind of flexy and can’t be opened with one hand. The memory is soldered but the maximum amount of RAM is 32GB of LPDDR5-4800MHz which is for sure future-proof. There is just one M.2 slot that is compatible with Gen 4 SSDs.

The Acer Aspire 5 (A515-58M) can attract buyers with its pleasant price, snappy performance, good comfort under load, and great optional 1440p display.

Read more »
