Acer Aspire 5 (A515-58M) review – snappy device with very good display and low price
Design and construction
The design is typical for this year’s Aspire lineup. It’s clean and simple which is good. Because of the non-intrusive look, you can use this laptop in the office, in school, or in your home. It’s not heavy and thick so you can take the notebook with you in the park for instance. The profile is 17.99 mm and the weight is 1.77 kg.
Sadly, you can’t open the lid with a single hand. It’s not very rigid though, you can bend it in the middle if you press a bit harder and you can flex it moderately when it’s opened. However, we’ve seen a lot more spongier lids than this one which is made of metal by the way. The plastic base can be considered as stable except for the zone between the two hinges and the area around the touchpad.
The bezels surrounding the display aren’t the thinnest. On top of the panel, there is a 1080p Web camera with Temporal Noise Reduction.
The so-called lifting hinge is part of the package. When the lid is opened above a 90-degree angle, its lower side lifts the back of the base. That’s better for the ergonomics while typing and it’s also beneficial for the cooling system because more fresh air can reach the fan.
The keyboard has a backlight and a NumPad. The key travel and the feedback are decent but nothing spectacular. The board is okay for long typing sessions but if writing is your main job you can look for other options. The touchpad is moisture-resistant, and its smoothness and accuracy are normal for this kind of price tag. Our laptop lacks a fingerprint reader – this extra is an option.
Flipping the laptop upside down will reveal four rubber feet, a big ventilation grille, a battery reset pinhole, and two speaker cutouts. The hot air is pushed through a vent on the back of the laptop so part heat is reaching the lower part of the display.
Ports
On the left side, there is a charging plug, a Thunderbolt 4 port with charging and Display Port capabilities, an HDMI 2.1 connector, and a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port with power-off charging support. On the right side, you will find a Kensington lock slot, another USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and an audio jack.

Read more »
