Acer Predator Triton 14 (PT14-51) review – compact powerhouse

    Verdict

The Acer Predator Triton 14 (PT14-51) is a mind-blowing 14-inch gaming tool. Its performance is great – the optional NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 (Laptop, 105W) can show at least around 100 FPS on Ultra details in the tested titles. The CPU can maintain high P and E core clocks even in prolonged periods of heavy loads, which is a respectable result for such a compact machine. This is possible because of the potent cooling solution. Acer has also applied liquid metal on the processor die.

The aluminum chassis is solid with a few exceptions here and there. The anodized finish feels premium to the touch and hey – it doesn’t attract a lot of smudges. Because the cooling fans breathe air through the keycaps, the keyboard remains pleasantly cool even when the internals are working hard. This reminds us that the board is comfortable for both typing and gaming, and the touchpad is fast and smooth.

The I/O isn’t full of ports but the selection is modern with its Thunderbolt 4, MicroSD card reader, and an HDMI 2.1. The upgradability isn’t great but that’s one of the sacrifices that has to be made for the small chassis and the 14-inch form factor. Still, the maximum amount of soldered RAM is 32GB of LPDDR5-6000 MHz which should be enough for most users.

The optional 16:10 1600p Mini LED display (AUO B140QAN06.V (AUO77A8)) offers a great contact ratio of 12000:1 and a high maximum brightness. The panel has snappy pixel response times and it covers fully the sRGB and the DCI-P3 gamuts. With the aid of our “Design and Gaming” profile, the color accuracy reaches an average dE value of 2.4 which is a good result, considering the 4.5 default score with the out-of-the-box settings. The only downside of the screen is the PWM usage.

This is a jam-packed notebook – it has a MUX switch to unleash the full GPU power, NVIDIA Advanced Optimus and G-Sync are also on board. The battery life is decent considering the hardware and the high-res display – 6 hours and 40 minutes of Web browsing, or 5 hours and 53 minutes of video playback.
