Acer Predator Triton 17X (PTX17-71) review – Mini LED screen with an absurdly powerful hardware

Acer’s Predator Triton 17X (PTX17-71) is an homage to the Predator Triton 700, which was one of the first extremely powerful thin, and light gaming laptops. What is behind this idea, though?

Well, the answer is pretty straightforward – the search for excellence. And in the middle of 2023, excellence means having an RTX 4090 with a 175W TGP, while the processor should be a minimum of a Core i9-13900HX.

As you can imagine, this will cost you a fortune, and you have all right to demand perfection. What does perfection look like in terms of a display? If you ask Acer, they will tell you – a 17-inch 2560×1600 Mini LED unit with a 250Hz refresh rate, HDR 1000 support, and full DCI-P3 coverage. It all sounds like a dream.

However, we are no less skeptical than always, when we hear or see bold claims from manufacturers. After all, the Predator Triton 17X aspires to be one of the best gaming notebooks on the market, and it has quite sizeable competition.

I have one of these on order. I couldn’t find any information if it has a Mux switch and thank goodness you mentioned it at the end of your view. So Thank you.

I am sadden by the lackluster performance. How and which mode is used? Are they hitting thermal throttling or power limit? Which mode was used for all the benchmarking?

As I recall the 2023 Asus Zephyrus Duo 16 only does the 175w CPU+GPU if it is in Turbo mode. Could it be possible Acer only allows 175w on CPU+GPU the same way?
