Acer Predator Triton 17X (PTX17-71) review – Mini LED screen with an absurdly powerful hardware
Temperatures and comfort, Battery Life
Max CPU load
In this test we use 100% on the CPU cores, monitoring their frequencies and chip temperature. The first column shows a computer’s reaction to a short load (2-10 seconds), the second column simulates a serious task (between 15 and 30 seconds), and the third column is a good indicator of how good the laptop is for long loads such as video rendering.
Average P-core frequency; Average E-core frequency; CPU temp.; Package Power
| Intel Core i9-13900HX (55W TDP) | 0:02 – 0:10 sec | 0:15 – 0:30 sec | 10:00 – 15:00 min |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acer Predator Triton 17X (PTX17-71) | 1.31 GHz @ 3.53 GHz @ 81°C @ 157W | 1.55 GHz @ 3.48 GHz @ 90°C @ 157W | 2.55 GHz @ 3.12 GHz @ 96°C @ 140W |
| Lenovo Legion Pro 7 (16″, 2023) | 3.61 GHz @ 3.05 GHz @ 84°C @ 171W | 3.42 GHz @ 2.88 GHz @ 86°C @ 148W | 3.29 GHz @ 2.81 GHz @ 87°C @ 137W |
This device has a little weird behavior when it comes to extreme workloads. The first 10-30 seconds it looks like it doesn’t really know what’s going on. This makes the P-cores run at quite low clocks, while the E-cores are boosting a lot. Then, after the 1-minute mark, the P-cores figure out that they are needed, and push to full power, only to fall down to about 2.55 GHz after 10 minutes into the test.
Real-life gaming
| NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 | GPU frequency/ Core temp (after 2 min) | GPU frequency/ Core temp (after 30 min) |
|---|---|---|
| Acer Predator Triton 17X (PTX17-71) | 1726 MHz @ 69°C @ 139W | 1714 MHz @ 72°C @ 140W |
| ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 (G834, 2023) | 1901 MHz @ 72°C @ 172W | 1883 MHz @ 76°C @ 172W |
Here, we see quite the contrast between the Predator Triton 17X (PTX17-71) and the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 (G834, 2023). It runs at frequencies that are 150-200MHz lower, and a 30W lower wattage. On the bright side, the RTX 4090 doesn’t get too warm.
Gaming comfort
Now, if you want to extract the most out of this laptop, you have to expect some noise. But what caught us off-guard was the 50+°C temperature in the middle of the keyboard.
Battery
Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with. Here, the 99.9Wh battery pack lasts for 4 hours and 55 minutes of Web browsing, or 4 hours and 18 minutes of video playback.
Brightness: 180 nits; Display Mode: SDR
Time to Full Discharge: Higher is Better

In order to simulate real-life conditions, we used our own script for automatic web browsing through over 70 websites.

I have one of these on order. I couldn’t find any information if it has a Mux switch and thank goodness you mentioned it at the end of your view. So Thank you.
I am sadden by the lackluster performance. How and which mode is used? Are they hitting thermal throttling or power limit? Which mode was used for all the benchmarking?
As I recall the 2023 Asus Zephyrus Duo 16 only does the 175w CPU+GPU if it is in Turbo mode. Could it be possible Acer only allows 175w on CPU+GPU the same way?
Any updates on your purchase?
