Acer Swift Edge (SFX16-61G) review – thin, powerful, and noisy

Verdict

The Acer Swift Edge (SFX16-61G) is definitely a multipurpose device. It has a modern and mature design so you can be a gamer in disguise in the office thanks to the powerful CPU and GPU. People who are traveling a lot should like the thin profile (17.9 mm) and the weight which is below 2 kilos.

The 3.2K OLED display (Samsung AMOLED ATNA60BX03-0 (SDC418D) can be used for professional color-related work because it has 100% sRGB and DCP-P3 coverage. Its contrast ratio is practically infinite which is great for consuming content or playing games with beautiful graphics like Cyberpunk 2077.

No matter the compact dimensions, the laptop is also a true gaming device. The display has fast pixel response times and because of the potent hardware, you can enjoy eye-candy graphics alongside high FPS. For instance, you can play Far Cry 6 on Ultra details with more than 90 FPS on average which is a good result.

The iGPU (in our case, that’s the AMD Radeon 780M) is powerful too and maybe you can use it when you are away from the charger but you want to play some CS:GO. The dedicated graphics card can maintain a stable TGP of 96W and more than 2500MHz in long gaming sessions. This is possible due to the good cooling solution. The powerful Ryzen 9 7940HS can sustain a 3.92GHz clock under 100% stress which is super close to the 4.00GHz official base clock.

The backlit keyboard has a NumPad, and it is comfortable for typing. The touchpad is huge, it has a smooth glass surface and it’s a real pleasure to work. The I/O is also nice including two USB4 ports and a MicroSD card reader. The upgradeable options have a good and a bad side. Let’s start with the good one – the two M.2 slots for Gen 4 SSDs.

The bad side is the soldered memory and the lack of SODIMMs. The maximum amount of RAM is 16GB LPDDR5-6400MHz which is still enough for daily tasks and gaming but it’s not optimal in the long run. The battery life isn’t great but that’s due to the high-res display and the potent hardware. The unit also discharges during gaming in Turbo mode.

The Acer Swift Edge (SFX16-61G) is a capable thin and light device that is suitable for work, gaming, and content creation thanks to its OLED display and up-to-date CPU and GPU.

I just bought this laptop and I can confirm that the PWM of this OLED panel is really bad. This is my first oled laptop and for some reason, my eyes get tired easily while using this laptop. I just learned about PWM because I can feel the effects now. I checked my previous Legion Y540 and it has no PWM, no wonder I can stare at it all day and feel ok. I’m also using Samsung Note 20 Ultra but I don’t get eye strain and fatigue even when my brightness is set to below 50%, which is why… Read more »
