Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP216-51) review – its upgradability and cooling are very good

    Verdict

The Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP216-51) is a surprisingly good laptop. Its build quality is not the best but the device can offer long battery life and great CPU clocks under heavy loads. The cooling solution with just one fan and two heat pipes seems enough for a 28W CPU limit during longer processor stress and that’s a very good result.

The fan isn’t noisy and on the outside, the board doesn’t become scorching hot even while benchmarking the internals with Cinebench R24. If you prefer to work in a quiet environment, you can apply the “Silent mode” in the Acer Quick Access app. Both the keyboard and touchpad are comfortable for work.

The security features seem on point (but some are optional) – a Web camera with a privacy shutter, a TPM 2.0 chip, and self-healing bios. You have to pay more for extras like a fingerprint reader and a vPro CPU. The upgrade options are great which is a rare find in this price category – two SODIMMs, two M.2 slots, and you can rely on a SATA slot if you don’t need optional LTE connectivity. Nice!

The 16″ IPS display (AUO B160UAN03.0 (AUOBDA2)) is all you need for normal office work. It has a 16:10 aspect ratio, wide viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. Last but not least, the panel is PWM-free so long hours of work shouldn’t be a problem if you take regular breaks. The sRGB coverage is just 52% but that normal for such a notebook that isn’t meant for content creation or photo editing. The I/O isn’t full of ports but you get a Thunderbolt 4, two Type A’s, and a microSD Card reader – not bad.

The Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP216-51) doesn’t cost a lot and it amazes us with its long battery life, high CPU frequencies, and great upgradability.
