HP OMEN Transcend 16 (u1000) review – RTX 4070 Power, 240Hz Display in a Thin Chassis

    Temperatures and comfort, Battery Life

    Max CPU load

In this test we use 100% on the CPU cores, monitoring their frequencies and chip temperature. The first column shows a computer’s reaction to a short load (2-10 seconds), the second column simulates a serious task (between 15 and 30 seconds), and the third column is a good indicator of how good the laptop is for long loads such as video rendering.

The Core i7-14700HX inside the OMEN Transcend 16 (u1000) can maintain good clocks in any kind of load (notably higher than the official base values). As you can see, the frequencies are lower compared to the other two machines that we have tested with the same CPU but these two devices are also thicker and heavier than the 16-inch Omen here.

The GeForce RTX 4060 (Laptop) can sustain 2625 MHz after half an hour of gaming. That’s one of the highest clocks we’ve seen among all other RTX 4060-based laptops that we have reviewed.

    Gaming comfort

The fans can be turned off in idle or during light loads if you untick the “Fan always on” function in the BIOS. If not, the fan speed is around 2000 RPM in “Performance” or “Balanced” mode.

During heavy CPU or GPU loads in “Performance” mode, the fans are notably audible (5200 RPM fan speed), but the noise isn’t unbearable. The mentioned preset is tied with the max possible GPU TGP of ~114W. In long gaming sessions, the keyboard doesn’t feel scorching hot to the touch.

The noise is way lower (3200 – 3900 RPM) in “Balanced” mode but that comes at a price – lower CPU clocks (around 2.0GHz for the P cores and 1.8GHz for the E cores) and GPU TGP limit (~94W).

You can manually bump the fan speed to 5600 RPM or you can set a custom fan curve.

    Battery

Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with. This laptop’s 97Wh battery pack lasts for around 8 hours of either Web browsing or video playback. To achieve that, you have to select the “Balanced” preset in the OMEN Gaming Hub app and apply the Optimus mode in the NVIDIA Control Panel so you can use the iGPU when the power adapter isn’t plugged in. Also, you have to select the “Balanced” preset in the Windows “Power & Battery” menu. The “Fan always on” mode is turned off.
