HP OMEN Transcend 16 (u1000) review – RTX 4070 Power, 240Hz Display in a Thin Chassis
Design and construction
The design of the HP OMEN Transcend 16 (u1000) hasn’t changed much compared to the Omen 16 (16-wd0000). The laptop looks stealthy in Shadow Black color and only the OMEN logo on the lid hints that this is a gaming beast. The notebook is made of metal, including the bottom plate (which is a rare find these days, at least when it comes to such machines).
The lid opens smoothly with a single hand. Unfortunately, the unit is spongy in the middle and you can flex it with ease in an open position. The situation with the base is much better – the body is solid and can be slightly pressed down in the zones above the touchpad and below the Arrows keys. This can be observed only when you apply pressure on purpose, during typing or gaming, you shouldn’t see any flexes on the main body. The device is compact for a 16-incher – 2.174 kg starting weight and 19.9 mm profile thickness.
The lower bezel is definitely thick while the other three are thin.
The 1080p 30FPS Web camera with echo cancellation, noise suppression, and a privacy shutter is placed above the display.
The max angle of the opening is 180-degree which is great especially when you want to share some on-screen info with other people.
The long ventilation grill is positioned above the backlit keyboard. The latter lacks a NumPad section but it has big Arrows keys that are separated from the main deck alongside an Omen Gaming Hub shortcut. All keycaps have a surprisingly long travel and the feedback is clicky. This makes the board suitable for both typing and gaming. You can also opt for a 4-zone RGB model with Anti-Ghosting Key technology. The touchpad is well-sized but its surface isn’t very smooth. Contrary to that, the accuracy is good.
The backlight can be controlled via the HP software.
The design of the bottom panel is a bit different than the HP Omen 16 (16-wd0000) and you can see part of the cooling through the sizable ventilation grill. On the plate, you can also spot two long rubber feet and two speaker cutouts. The heat is pushed through four vents – two on the back and two on the sides.
Ports
On the left, you get two Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 40Gbps ports (that support 100W USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort 1.4, and HP Sleep and Charge) and an Audio combo jack. The rear houses a power connector, LAN, HDMI 2.1 (for up to 8K@60Hz external displays), and a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port. On the right, there is another USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port with an HP Sleep and Charge function.
