Lenovo Legion Slim 5 (14, Gen 8) review – the overall performance is great but the Zen 4 CPU gets hot in CPU-intensive tasks

Creating a small but powerful laptop is always a serious challenge for every manufacturer. Combining powerful internals into a small and thin chassis always comes with some compromises, or at least in most cases. One of the latest successful iterations in this class is the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 GA402 (2023). Lenovo is ready to strike back with its Legion Slim 5 (14, Gen 8) device. As you may expect, this a a compact gaming notebook that brings high-end hardware to the table as well as many other goodies such as up-to-date I/O and Wi-Fi 6/E + Bluetooth 5.1 for connectivity.

The laptop is offered with just one display variant but since it’s a 2880×1800 OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, there is nothing to moan about. Oh, wait, this kind of panel definitely bumps up the end price of the machine. The power department looks great – you can choose between several Zen 4 CPUs and NVIDIA RTX 4000 GPUs with decent TGPs.

Nowadays, everything is related to AI and that’s why the built-in LA1 AI chip can optimally tune the system performance depending on the usage. If you are lazy, you can use this fancy “Auto” option and the chip will dynamically optimize the laptop’s power. Of course, you can do everything manually thanks to the Lenovo Vantage app. It contains useful extras such as performance presets, GPU OC function, dGPU and iGPU modes, and many more.

Do something prevents me to upgrade the sodimm slot with a 32GB stick? The PC does not detects more than 24GB of ram, does not starts or is possible to have it with 40GB of total system memory?

There are no SODIMM slots, only the soldered LPDDR5x-6400 memory, so it’s not upgradable. Or do you have the 16-inch variant which has two SODIMM slots?
