MSI Vector GP78 HX (13V) review – offers great build quality, fast display, and exceptional performance
Design and construction
The design is a bit more stealthy and clean compared to the GE78 version. Here, you will not find a crazy amount of glowing RGBs on the base which can be a deal-breaker for some of you. The lid can bend slightly in the middle but that’s all – the base is solid. The bottom plate is plastic as well as the hinge cover while the rest is made of metal.
The dimensions are normal for a big-screen machine that can be configured with high-end hardware. The profile is 23.55~29.45 mm and we got 3.0 kilos of weight. This device is a bit lighter than the Raider GE78 HX (13VX)
The lid can be opened with a single hand. This happens very smoothly and there is very little wobble while changing the angle. The bezels surrounding the display are narrow. The top one houses a 720p IR Web camera with a privacy shutter.
The keyboard is comfortable for typing and gaming. The per-key RGB unit can be customized via the SteelSeries app.
The keycaps are big and have good key travel and clicky feedback. The only downside is the Numpad which isn’t full-sized no matter the big base.
There is a lot of unused space around the touchpad which could be larger.
Aside from that, the pad has a smooth surface that allows effortless gliding and great accuracy. The clicking mechanism feels nice but the clicks are a bit louder.
On the bottom plate, we can see five rubber feet that are different in size, two speaker cutouts, and a large ventilation grill that reveals a big part of the cooling which is a joy to watch. The hot air is pushed through two vents on the back and there is one more on either side of the notebook.
Ports
On the left, there is a Thunderbolt 4 connector, an SD card reader, and an Audio combo jack. You get a 2.5Gbit LAN port, an HDMI 2.1 for up to 8K 60Hz external displays, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) connector with DisplayPort functionality, and a power connector on the back. On the right, we can spot a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) port with Power Delivery and DisplayPort support, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, and a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port.
How did this test specifically go?
I’m curious about the stress test program, temperature monitoring program, and fan settings.
My laptop has a firestrike CPU temperature of 94 degrees even with ptm7950 and undervolting.
